Andrew, a young, vibrant individual with a full-time career and an independent lifestyle, faced an unexpected medical crisis that changed his life in an instant. Following a right basal ganglia hemorrhage and subsequent respiratory failure, Andrew was hospitalized and required intensive care. After stabilization at a local hospital in Houston, Texas he was transferred to Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center for specialized care in Kindred’s Neuro Transitions Program.
Upon admission, Andrew’s recovery plan focused on addressing respiratory failure, cognitive and psychological challenges, severe muscle weakness, and poor endurance. Given his condition, he required a comprehensive and tailored approach involving respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapies—all structured within Kindred’s Neuro Transitions Program, which emphasizes a holistic approach to neurological recovery.
The respiratory team worked with Andrew to gradually wean him off the ventilator, enabling him to breathe independently. This achievement allowed Andrew to focus on regaining other vital functions. His journey was not without challenges as Andrew initially faced cognitive and psychological barriers, requiring careful coordination between his medical team and rehabilitation therapists to ensure consistent progress. Andrew’s physical and occupational therapists initially used a tilt table to aid neurostimulation, helping Andrew safely transition from bed to a more upright position. This foundational work set the stage for more advanced physical therapy exercises, including transfer training and endurance-building activities. With each session and numerous hours of therapy, Andrew’s muscle strength improved, and his endurance improved, which were key factors in regaining his independence.
Due to his respiratory condition, Andrew’s ability to swallow safely had been compromised. Speech-language pathologists (SLP) focused on restoring his swallowing function and cognitive-linguistic skills. With specialized exercises and careful monitoring, the SLP team reintroduced Andrew to a diet by mouth, gradually allowing him to enjoy meals again which was a significant milestone in his recovery. Alongside therapy, wound care played an essential role in Andrew’s recovery. Dedicated attention to his cranial surgical sites ensured that his incisions healed without infection, providing a strong foundation for his continued rehabilitation and well-being.
Through Kindred’s Neuro Transitions Program, Andrew made incredible strides in his recovery. He surpassed all the goals set in his care plan. Upon discharge, Andrew transitioned to Kindred’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU), where he will continue to focus on advanced therapy, rehabilitation, and strength training. With this next phase, Andrew is well on his way to a vibrant and active life he once enjoyed.
