American Society of Emergency Radiology

American Society of Emergency Radiology We provide resources, set standards of care and promote research in Emergency Radiology (ERAD) and emergent patient care in the US and around the world.

In 1987, while attending Harvard’s Emergency Radiology course, eight radiologists met to discuss the formation of a new group to define and disseminate the body of knowledge unique to emergency radiology. The American Society of Emergency Radiology was formed in 1988 from this small nucleus and has steadily increased in numbers and interest, providing consultation to radiologists and corporations

who deal with emergency radiology challenges. Since 1995 the Society membership has sponsored a new journal of practical imaging, Emergency Radiology, in which peer reviewed articles are presented and discussed.

Title: Predictors of diagnostic errors in computed tomography interpretation by emergency physicians leading to changes in clinical management in the emergency department

Purpose: The use of computed tomography (CT) in the emergency department (ED) has been increasing due to its diagnostic value for emergency physicians (EPs). This study aimed to determine the predictors of EP interpretation errors (IEs) on CT scans leading to change in clinical management (IECM) in both endogenous and exogenous ED visits.

Title: The reverse halo sign in emergency chest CT: A diagnostic guide across diverse pulmonary conditions

Purpose: The atoll sign, also known as the reverse halo sign (RHS), is defined by a central ground-glass opacity encircled by a rim of consolidation. Originally described in the context of organizing pneumonia, it is now recognized across a spectrum of conditions—including infectious, inflammatory, vascular, malignant, and traumatic pathologies. This pictorial essay examines the various clinical scenarios in which the RHS is observed on emergency CT, highlighting its crucial role in differential diagnosis and patient management.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:
Title: Rapid abdominal MRI for appendicitis for evaluation of ovarian torsion in children

Purpose: Diagnosing adnexal torsion is challenging due to non-specific presentation and ultrasound findings. MRI may provide alternative assessment of adnexal torsion. We evaluated an MRI appendicitis protocol for torsion identification.
