Here is a brief video of introductions from the Special Education Panel event at the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics and Autism at Texas Children’s Hospital this past Wednesday.

It was an honor to be part of a powerful conversation speaking to pediatric trainees on how they can support & empower families of students with disabilities. Grateful for the opportunity to connect, collaborate & continue serving our community. 💙

This was the topic of a question our owner was asked yesterday at the special education panel…how can parents ensure or make sure their child’s IEP is being implemented.

We empower parents to move from passive observers to active monitors of implementation other child’s IEP — which is where a lot of breakdowns happen.

5 Tips to Ensure Your Child’s IEP Is Being Implemented Properly

An IEP is only as effective as its implementation. Here’s how parents can monitor and protect their child’s services:

✔️ Check in with teachers regularly (conferences, emails, communication logs)
✔️ Contact the Special Education team lead/department head/case manager if the IEP is not being followed
✔️ Review IEP progress reports (get the progress reports)
✔️ Monitor assignments, test scores, etc. & whether accommodations are being provided
✔️ Request an IEP meeting if concerns arise

Remember: You do not have to wait until the annual meeting to address concerns.

Reposting again because the topic of accurate data in an IEP is so important to a child’s progress. If the Present Levels aren’t data-driven…the IEP isn’t built on solid ground.

The Present Levels is the star ⭐️ of the IEP. Data is the foundation of the present levels.
Everything flows from the present levels:
✔️ Goals
✔️ Services
✔️ Accommodations
✔️ ESY decisions
✔️ Progress monitoring

If the present levels are vague, the entire IEP will be vague.
🚩 “Struggles with reading.”
🚩 “Making progress.”
🚩 “Doing better.”
🚩 “Has difficulty focusing.”
Those are opinions — not data.

Present levels should include:
📊 Baseline percentages
📊 Frequency (how often?)
📊 Duration (how long?)
📊 Accuracy rates
📊 Grade-level comparisons
📊 Number of prompts required

Without baseline data:
❌ Goals can’t be measured
❌ Progress can’t be monitored
❌ Services can’t be justified
❌ The district can’t be held accountable

❓Parents — you have the right to ask:
• What is the baseline data?
• How was it collected?
• Over what time period?
• How does this show impact on general education?

💡No baseline = no measurable goal.

✅ The Present Levels are not just a section of the IEP. They are the blueprint.
