“In the art of teaching yoga, the teacher encourages the pupil to think and feel for himself, explore the body and experiment with the postures, study life and nature, delve deeply into yoga and its philosophy of life.” B.K.S. Iyengar, The Art of Yoga

B.K.S. Iyengar has told his students that what they do in class is not, strictly speaking, yoga practice. This is because the “directing intelligence” is coming from the teacher. At home, on the other hand, the students’ own intelligence guides them and the progress that they make is their own. Consequently, the Iyengar method emphasizes the importance of a personal practice to strengthen one’s yogic journey and offers encouragement and support along the way.

"Yoga is for everyone...It is never to late to start."

“Even as the body ages and is able to do less, there are subtleties that reveal themselves, which would be invisible to younger or more athletic bodies. You have to create love and affection for your body, for what it can do for you. Love must be incarnated in the smallest pore of the skin, the smallest cell of the body, to make them intelligent so they can collaborate with all the other ones, in the big republic of the body.” BKS Iyengar, Light on Life

Contrary to what flashy yoga magazines and advertisements might suggest, yoga is not just for young, flexible bodies. Yoga is for EVERYONE. Nowhere is this better evidenced than in Iyengar Yoga, where students as young as seven and well into their 90s can safely practice yoga and enjoy its many benefits. In many Iyengar classes, you may witness 30 year-olds and 70 year-olds in headstands right next to one another. It is never too late to start! Study with a Certified Iyengar Teacher (CIYT) whose top priority is your safety and who is trained to help you begin and maintain a yoga practice at any stage of life.

Happy Guru Purnima!

“Gu” means darkness and “ru” means light in Sanskrit. “Guru” is the one who leads us from darkness to light, showing the path forward. The Guru, or teacher, is the one who opens the eyes of awareness of the pupil. Light is always there, but it is covered by darkness. More specifically, knowledge is always there, but ignorance covers it. The teacher helps to clear the student’s intellect so that it may reveal the truth.

(Based in part on a lecture given on 12th July 1987 at the Guru Purnima Celebration, Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute, Pune by Geeta S. Iyengar)

Did you know that when you practice Iyengar Yoga you are part of a long lineage of yoga masters? B.K.S. Iyengar studied with Tirumalai Krishnamacharya in Mysore. Krishnamacharya studied with the legendary guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari who was believed to have lived in a cave in the Himalayas. All based their teachings on Sage Patanjali’s yoga sutras written more than 2,500 years ago. Before that, the ancient practices of yoga (presently thought to trace back to at least 3000 BCE) were transmitted orally from guru to student.

The succession of this rich knowledge from one guru to the next continues today as Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) pass on what they have learned from B.K.S. Iyengar and his family.
