The Montrose Center was founded in 1978 as Montrose Counseling Center to address the gap in accessible and affirming mental health services for gay men and lesbians. The Center was one of the first to respond to the emergence of HIV and AIDS in the 1980s and continues to provide HIV counseling, case management, housing, and emergency financial assistance to those living with HIV. Over the years, we have expanded our services to include intensive outpatient treatment for alcohol and substance use recovery, violence survivor services regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, hate crimes and human trafficking through our Anti-Violence Program, HIV/STI community health screenings, education and outreach, and programs designed specifically to meet the needs of youth and seniors. Our LGBT Switchboard 24-hour help line is also accessible 24-hours a day for crisis intervention, peer phone counseling, and information/referral. The Center regularly provides health education and disease prevention outreach to more than 40,000 individuals each year, and offers training to schools, corporations and healthcare professionals on these topics as well as general LGBTQ+ diversity issues. Over the last 40+ years, the Montrose Center has become Houston's hub for the LGBTQ+ community, regularly organizing events and programing in our first floor community center. With everything from free wellness and educational classes to meetings and events hosted by dozens of other social, civic and nonprofit groups, there is literally something for everyone happening at the Center nearly every day

The Center is an affiliated agency of United Way of Greater Houston and accredited by The Joint Commission in behavioral health. It became the first Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in Texas and remains the only CCBHC in the nation with a focus on LGBTQ+ individuals and people living with HIV. We have an Institutional Review Board [IRB] that must approve any and all surveys conducted through the Montrose Center and its electronic outlets (website, social media, email, etc.). Please contact Rick Musquiz at 713.529.0037 or rmusquiz@montrosecenter.org. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are thrilled that you are part of the political process and a registered voter, but any partisan political comments will be removed.

Wellness can be messy, emotional, and nonlinear, and JuJu Faragher believes that is exactly the point. Through yoga, storytelling, and community work, he invites LGBTQ people to slow down, release perfection, and treat wellness as something we practice together. Link in comments.

On Thursday, January 8, an unknown individual vandalized the Montrose Center, stripping and breaking the rainbow Pride flags from our fence and throwing them to the ground. The flags were raised in 2025 as a visible symbol of support for Houston's LGBTQ+ community following the removal of the city's rainbow crosswalk.

A police report has been filed with the Houston Police Department.

Most importantly, our team, clients, and visitors are safe.

"Whether this was an act of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment or a person experiencing a crisis, our community is too often a target of these kinds of actions," said Avery Belyeu, CEO of the Montrose Center. "Let us be clear: we are not going anywhere. You can tear down a thousand of our flags and we will still show up every day to provide affirming care and a safe space for our community to connect, gather, and show our Pride."

We know moments like these can bring up challenging emotions and our community members are often recipients of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments and bias. Our team is available to helpβ€”whether through individual counseling, support groups, or simply a space to connect.

The Center will host the second annual Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Community Summit on February 7–8. We are increasing our security presence for the event to ensure all attendees remain safe.

How You Can Show Your Support:
Attend the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Community Summit on February 7–8
Make a donation to the Center
Show your Pride and raise a flag πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ
