🍏 Packing school lunches that are both healthy and something your child will actually eat is no small task. Between picky preferences and busy mornings, it’s easy to fall into a routine that feels more about convenience than nutrition.

🩺 “A balanced lunch helps kids stay energized and focused during the school day,” says Dr. Nathan Sinsheimer, pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “It can also support their mood and make it easier for them to handle what the day brings.”

✨ To build a lunch that works, try including a protein source and something fresh like cut fruit or vegetables. Skip sugary drinks and pack water or milk when possible. Small changes can add up, especially when they become part of a regular routine.

📲 If you’re not sure where to start, or your child has specific dietary needs, our pediatricians can help. We’ll work with you to find realistic ways to make lunch healthier without adding stress to your mornings.

🩺 Polycystic o***y syndrome, or PCOS, affects about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. But despite being so common, it can go undiagnosed because the symptoms often build over time and vary from one person to the next.

“A PCOS diagnosis can take time,” says Dr. Enyioma Muolokwu, OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “But once we identify it, we can make a real difference in how you feel and function every day.” PCOS can look like changes in your period, shifts in energy or mood, or physical symptoms that are hard to explain. For some, getting pregnant becomes more difficult.

For some, managing PCOS means regulating periods or addressing symptoms like skin changes. Others may need support for fertility or help managing how their body responds to insulin. You don’t have to accept frustrating symptoms as your norm. Whether you’ve been diagnosed or are just starting to ask questions, our OB/GYNs are here to help you find answers and ease your symptoms.

🩺 Flu season often begins in the fall, and the virus spreads fast once it starts circulating in schools and workplaces. The best protection is getting a flu shot before cases rise, ideally by early fall so your immune system has time to respond.

“The flu vaccine helps prevent illness and may also reduce the severity of illness and protect others, especially infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems,” says Dr. Tapasya Mandalapu, an Internal Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “It’s a small step that makes a big difference.”

Even healthy people can feel the flu’s impact, and getting vaccinated each year gives your body the tools to recognize and fight off the virus. While the vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick, it makes it less likely you’ll develop serious complications.

✅ Kelsey-Seybold makes it easy to get your flu shot. You can add it to your next visit or schedule a standalone appointment. It’s one of the simplest ways to protect your health.

🏈 Outdoor practices expose student athletes to more than just heat. Combined with sweat and tight gear, the friction may irritate skin and lead to discomfort. What starts as mild redness or a stinging sensation may quickly turn into something more disruptive.

☀️ Start with sunscreen
“Sunscreen is not a one-time step,” says Dr. Jacquelyn Dang, dermatologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “To work well, it needs to be applied correctly and reapplied throughout the day.”
Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to dry skin before heading outdoors and reapply often, especially during long practices or in hot weather. Do not forget spots that are easy to miss, like the neck, ears, or tops of feet.

💪 Build habits at home
Help your child practice putting on sunscreen so they know how much to use and where to apply it.

👀 Watch for irritation and overheating
Sweat and friction from heavy equipment may lead to red patches, itching, or small bumps. They’re especially likely to show up in areas like the shoulders, thighs, and where straps rub. To help prevent this, encourage your child to wear moisture-wicking fabrics, change into dry clothes after practice, and keep their equipment clean.

🩺 If irritation shows up, wash the affected area gently and keep it dry. Applying a barrier product like zinc oxide ointment, petroleum jelly, or even a fragrance-free diaper cream may help protect the skin and help it heal. If symptoms get worse, our dermatologists can help you find a solution that fits your child’s needs.

🏀 Sports season means back to the field, and a physical is often the first step. But this visit is about more than just getting a form signed.

🩺 “Sports physicals give us the chance to make sure your child is truly ready for the activities ahead,” says Dr. Sonia Ozurumba, Pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “We look at the full picture of their health so they can participate safely and comfortably.”

At Kelsey-Seybold, we keep the process simple. During the visit, we review your child’s growth and movement and check their general fitness. If there’s a past injury or health concern that might affect participation, this is the time to bring it up.

We’ll also review vaccine records and talk through any conditions that may need support during physical activity, such as asthma.

📲 It helps to schedule the appointment before the season gets into full swing. That way, your child is cleared and ready to join their team without delays. We’re here to make sure they feel confident and cared for from the start.

🩺 August is National Breastfeeding Month. It’s a time to support parents who choose to breastfeed as well as acknowledge the real pressure many feel when feeding does not go as planned. While breastfeeding offers certain health benefits for your baby, it’s not always simple, and it’s not always possible for every mom.

“Our role is to support parents who want to breastfeed, and also to care for those who make a different choice,” says Dr. Jacey Beasley, OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Some families find breastfeeding works well for them. Others find that formula better fits their routine or allows them to care for their baby in a way that feels more manageable. What matters is that the baby is nourished and the parent feels supported, without pressure or guilt.”

That support includes access to personalized lactation care at Kelsey-Seybold. Our team offers both in-person and virtual visits to help you work through feeding challenges, answer questions, and build a plan that fits your needs.

At the same time, we understand that breastfeeding isn’t always the best fit. What matters is that your baby is well fed and that you feel confident in the care you are giving.

✅ Your child’s pediatrician can also help guide feeding decisions. They’ll monitor your baby’s growth and talk with you about how feeding is going, offering support and reassurance when things feel uncertain.
