The Independent Living Research Utilization program (http://www.ilru.org) at the TIRR Memorial Hermann Research Center in Houston, Texas, is seeking applicants for its 10 week long 2025 summer internship program, starting June 2, 2025. Interns will learn research methodology and approaches and receive a thorough grounding in the Americans with Disabilities Act, disability laws and policy, and disability and Independent Living history and philosophy. Interns will assist in conducting research, including surveys of centers for independent living; in doing so, they will apply what they have learned about research techniques and approaches.

Currently, there is a mentorship program run by ILRU in which mentees are able to learn more about disability related laws as well as get hands-on experience with volunteering in local disability organizations in Houston, TX.

ILRU is currently searching for mentees in the Houston area ages 18 and up with spinal cord injuries or other types of disabilities who are interested in community involvement and participating in educational opportunities about disability.

What: Spring 2025 Workshop Series: Part 1 – Consideration of Assistive Technology

Participants will learn about the process for the Consideration of Assistive Technology (AT) in a school setting and learn to apply the process for all students with disabilities. Participants will be introduced to legal requirements related to AT consideration.

Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the consideration of AT for all students with disabilities.
- Summarize what the law says about AT Consideration.
- List potential solutions available to help meet students’ IEP goals.
