Have you ever considered becoming an advocate for folks living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities? Here's a great opportunity to join the ranks of certified volunteer long-term care ombudsmen. The training is free, except for your time and energy. Next class starts on June 6 via Teams.

"Ready to be a resident's voice? Our 2024 training classes are now open for enrollment!

Our trainings will be held in two parts: Class I will be held Thursday, June 6th, 2024 from 9am-4pm, with the corresponding Class II held Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, also from 9am-4pm. Both classes will be held virtually via Microsoft TEAMS. As this is a live virtual training, camera and microphone capabilities are required for participation.

As a certified ombudsman, you will serve some of the most vulnerable individuals within our communities. We provide vital information and assistance to residents and families, as well as help navigate the seemingly ever-changing rules regarding the rights to visitation and care. We hope you will join us in continuing these impactful advocacy efforts.

Please email ombudsman@uth.tmc.edu for an application or call 713-500-9931 with any questions you may have.

We look forward to having you join us!"

Here are some key facts:

Prevalence:
Up to 60% of individuals with dementia will wander at some point, often due to confusion, disorientation, or a need to fulfill a perceived task.

Triggers:
Wandering can be triggered by various factors including anxiety, restlessness, boredom, or an attempt to find something or someone. It may also result from an inability to recognize familiar environments.

Risks:
Wandering poses significant safety risks, including getting lost, dehydration, hypothermia, traffic accidents, and falls. It can lead to severe injuries or even death if the person is not found quickly.

Management Strategies:
• Environmental Modifications: Install door alarms, motion sensors, and locks out of the person’s line of sight to prevent unsupervised exit.
• Identification: Ensure the person wears an ID bracelet or has identification on them at all times.
• Engagement: Keep the individual engaged in meaningful activities to reduce restlessness and the urge to wander.
• Safe Spaces: Create safe, enclosed areas where the person can move freely without the risk of getting lost.

Understanding and managing wandering behavior in dementia patients is crucial for their safety and well-being, requiring vigilant monitoring and preventive measures.

How it all started...

It all started back in 2011 when we decided to look at unmet needs in the CyFair/Cypress area of Northwest Houston. We found that many caregivers were overwhelmed and were forced with having to make the decision of carrying the burden of taking care of their loved alone or placing them in a 24 hour facility - such as a nursing home or assisted living facility.

This is where we discovered that we could make a magical and impactful difference. We decided to open VaughnGage Adult Day Center - and offer another important option to the community. We decided to launch the only free standing adult day center in the CyFair/Cypress area. We became pioneers of holist adult day services.

Now, families could bring their ailing loved one to our program and allow them to spend up to 8 hours a day with us - socializing, learning, developing relationships, getting a break from their daily routine, get cognitive stimulation, go on outings and much more!

Now, caregivers could get a break (respite), and still feel connected and avoid the guilt of placing their loved outside of the home and into a facility.
