I am with the 76% that believe that you can ACTUALLY heal from trauma and here’s why.

Over the past few years, I have worked with numerous clients who have experienced various types of trauma. Their experiences were complex and intense, causing several short and long term effects in their lives. Despite the odds, each and every one of them reported that through trauma therapy, they were able to process and heal from the trauma they experienced.

There are several kinds of trauma therapy that are shown to be successful, but the one I have seen success with specifically is Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). I love this therapy because it helps us cope with trauma symptoms, effectively process our trauma, and ensure our future safety and stability.

This therapy is also one of my favorites because it helps clients who have experienced complex trauma BUT there are aspects of it that are equally as effective for clients who are going through less complex life challenges, everyday obstacles, or change.

Over the next several weeks, I’m going to walk you through this therapy process and show you some proven ways that can actually help us heal from our trauma.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter made in your brain that plays a role as a “reward center” and contributes to many body functions including memory, movement, mood, motivation, attention, and more. It is the “feel good” hormone and can be released in many ways. There are healthy and unhealthy activities or things that can release dopamine.

We are functioning at our best when our diet consists of healthy forms of dopamine release.

Here’s how you may feel based on your dopamine levels:
-Balanced levels: happy, motivated, alert, focused, energetic, etc.
-High levels: inconsistent sleep patterns, poor inpulse control, increase in aggression, etc.
-Low levels: tired, unhappy, unmotivated, mood swings, memory/sleep/concentration problems.

Where are your levels today?

A dopamine menu consists of activities, things, or tasks that help you release dopamine in a healthy way and achieve a balanced level.

What does your daily routine look like?

A consistent daily routine can improve stress levels, anxiety, sleep, and self-confidence. It provides structure in our lives which promotes success and healthy habits.

My daily routine goals are to get sufficient sleep, eat a balanced diet, exercise, and check in with my friends and family. Doing these things each day not only fuels my body, but fuels my mental health!

This is your reminder to take time for yourself today.

Life moves fast and it’s important that we take time each day to focus on ourselves, our needs, and our well-being. If you dont know where to start, I recommend an evening walk listening to your favorite music or podcast (if you can push through the TX heat :) ). This gives you the time and space to clear your mind and take a minute away from our phones.

What is trauma?

Trauma is an experience or experiences that cause intense psychological and/or physical stress reactions. These experiences can have lasting effects on our well-being and lives as a whole. Put in simple terms, trauma is “the hard stuff”. Traumatic experiences are often out of a person’s control and difficult to cope with. However, healing is possible with time and treatment.

We are all bound to experience obstacles and hardships throughout our lifespan. It is how we overcome these obstacles and heal from them that will shape our lives and future.
