One year ago today, history was made at The Texas Heart Institute as the first BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) was implanted in a 57-year-old man who suffered from heart failure. The TAH implant was a success and the patient was supported by the device for 8 days until a donor heart became available for transplant. Today, the patient continues to do well. Congratulations to our patient, BiVACOR, Dr. Alexis Shafii, Dr. Joseph G. Rogers, M.D., Dr. William Cohn Dr. Daniel Timms, Dr. O.H. "Bud" Frazier, and the entire team for this amazing accomplishment in cardiovascular health.

𝐀 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲.

With mentorship from Dr. Mehdi Razavi, Director of Electrophysiology Clinical Research & Innovations at THI, and Dr. Feng Gao, one of our chief cardiology fellows, 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐂𝐚𝐭—a group of Rice University bioengineering seniors—designed a device to stabilize intracardiac imaging catheters, streamlining cardiac ablation procedures. The device was tested at THI and is now on the path to commercialization.
