Not every child needs to rush into orthodontics or palate expansion immediately.
Sometimes the body is asking for more preparation first.

From an osteopathic perspective, here are a few signs that may suggest the system still needs support before expansion begins:

👉🏽Cranial strains or asymmetries that may affect how the body receives and adapts to expansion forces
👉🏽High tension patterns throughout the face, jaw, neck, or body
👉🏽Recurrent head tilts
👉🏽Rib cage restrictions that may impact breathing mechanics and overall regulation
👉🏽Restricted diaphragmatic motion
👉🏽Difficulty tolerating intraoral work or oral stimulation
👉🏽Nervous system dysregulation, hypervigilance, or difficulty settling
👉🏽Poor coordination between breathing, posture, and oral function

The goal is not perfection before expansion.
But when the body has more adaptability, mobility, and regulation beforehand, the process is often better tolerated and function with less compensation and strain.

This could set them up for a more successful expansion journey.

And even if expansion has already started, it is not too late to support the body throughout the process.

If this is what you’re looking for, I am here to make this a more balanced journey for your child’s body.

Expansion is not just about making the palate wider.
It also involves how the child’s body, nervous system, cranial system, tongue function, posture, and airway adapt to the process as a whole.

Sometimes children enter orthodontic treatment already carrying significant tension, compensation patterns, dysregulation, or restrictions throughout the body.

This is why many families choose to support the body before and during expansion through things like:
• cranial work
• nervous system support
• bodywork

Expansion can be incredibly beneficial for many children.

This is simply about remembering that the mouth is connected to the rest of the body — and supporting the whole child along the way.

Did anyone talk to you about body or cranial preparation before expansion?

Horror Movie Trend 😂

Which point needs more conversation?

05/06/2026

1. Focusing only on the upper jaw or the teeth
Expansion is about more than creating space. The upper jaw, lower jaw, breathing, tongue posture, sleep, posture, and nervous system all work together.
2. Ignoring the root cause of mouth breathing
Mouth breathing is often a symptom. Tongue ties, enlarged adenoids/tonsils, congestion, poor tongue posture, allergies, tension patterns, or nervous system stress can all play a role.
3. Skipping body and cranial alignment before the expander is placed
Preparing the body beforehand may help support more symmetrical expansion and help the child better adapt to the changes.
4. Not considering a slower approach for sensitive children
Some children do better with slower, more gentle expansion and more time to adapt.
5. Not addressing tongue function afterward
The tongue naturally supports the palate. Poor tongue function may have contributed to the narrow palate in the first place, which is why proper function matters for long-term stability.
6. Thinking expansion alone “fixes” the airway
Airway health is multifactorial. Sleep, posture, oral function, inflammation, and nervous system regulation matter too.
7. Not considering proper retention afterward
Without proper retention, some children may lose progress inward again — especially if tongue function is still weak or developing.
8. Rushing from fear
Fear-based decisions rarely lead to the best outcomes. A supported, informed, whole-child approach matters most.

This is not about criticizing providers. We value and trust our providers. This is simply about helping parents feel informed and empowered to look at the child as a whole. ✨

When my husband asked me a while ago when I became suddenly so sick and no one knew what it was, no answers, diagnosis, but a completely overwhelmed nervous system - not able to function on so many levels, “could it be it’s from all the stuff you’re learning and going down those rabid holes”?

I had to stop, think and evaluate my lifestyle over the past two decades. It was for the most part very healthy outwardly, very driven, purpose oriented, but when I took a closer look at what else I was absorbing, I decided to make some drastic changes.

I evaluated my “intake”

- After I scroll… do I feel calm or tense? I constantly reevaluate who I follow and unfollow if it doesn’t serve in this season I am in right now
- If Conversations with certain people leave me more drained than refreshed, then for now we won’t talk too often
- After being in certain places… do I feel grounded or overstimulated?

The point is instead of asking myself: “What else should I do to heal?”
Also evaluating: “What am I exposing my nervous system to all day?”

That question alone can shift so much and can be the missing link to your health and wellbeing.

Additionally to making drastic changes in my lifestyle (mainly accepting and adjusting that I’m not in my twenties anymore and shouldn’t work like a man!!, prioritizing rest, finding out what it is that I actually like to do), turning off the well meaning noise in the health and wellness space made a HUGE difference!

Do you think it’s time to evaluate some of your “intakes”?
Does this topic resonate with you?

Love,
Elene

Tonight, take some time and look at your child while they sleep. 🤍

Here’s what to look for:

🚩 Signs of possible sleep-disordered breathing

• Mouth open while sleeping
• Snoring (even “light” or occasional)
• Pauses in breathing or gasping
• Restless sleep / tossing & turning
• Sweaty head or body at night
• Teeth grinding
• Neck extended / head tilted back
• Dark circles under eyes
• Waking often or not well-rested
• Bedwetting beyond expected age

✨ Why this matters: Sleep is when your child’s brain and body grow, heal, recharge, process information and so much more.

👉 WHAT TO DO NEXT

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Start here:
📍 Airway-focused pediatric dentist or orthodontist
📍 ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist) (to assess adenoids/tonsils)
📍 Myofunctional Therapist
📍 Pediatric Sleep Specialist (if concerns are significant)

I collaborate with those professionals when parents come in with their child for:

• Already in orthodontics
• Poor posture (forward head, open mouth, slouching)
• Restless, sensitive, or “wired but tired”
• Trouble focusing / big emotions
• Headaches or neck tension
• Chronic congestion / always stuffy / ear infections
• Difficulty falling or staying asleep
• Difficulty nursing

Airway health effects the entire body and it shows up structurally the way the face and jaws develop, tensions / restrictions throughout the body, their breathing patterns, their walk and so much more.

💡This is why holistic bodywork should be an integral part in addressing the airway, if we don’t just want to treat a symptom but the person.

No, you’re not overthinking it—you’re paying attention.

Save this so you know what to look for tonight.
And tell me… what did you notice? 👇

Many moms are told that back pain, rib pressure, hip discomfort, or breathlessness are simply part of pregnancy.

While the body is absolutely adapting, it doesn’t mean it has to feel overwhelmed.

Gentle bodywork can help:
✨ improve pelvic mobility and relieve muscle tension
✨ ease rib cage restriction and allow fuller breath
✨ support the nervous system and help you relax
✨ create more space for baby’s growth

Pregnancy is a season of profound change.
Supporting the mother’s body during this time can make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable.

If you’re for it let’s connect! 😊

After some massaging and mobilization of his shoulders we end with a stretch and Muscle energy technique while laying over a Pilates ball to:

• improve shoulder mobility
• extend the thoracic spine
• open the rib cage for better breathing
• reduce upper-body tension

Can you see the improved range of motion of his shoulders compared from the beginning and the end?

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a gentle manual therapy method where the client actively contracts specific muscles against a controlled resistance provided by the practitioner. After the brief contraction, the muscle relaxes and the joint or tissue can be guided into a new, improved range of motion.

These images are four months apart.
First one was taken September 2025, the second one today, January 19th 2026. My boy turned six last November.

Can you see the differences such as size of adenoids and airway? What else do you notice?

We’ve done lymphatic drainage and cranial work. Now we’re ready for palate expansion to address jaw growth/teeth crowding.

Just from the manual therapy alone we noticed:
no more nasal congestion, bed wetting.
We’re hoping for sleep to continue to improve!
