Nafil was like any other 5-year-old, vibrant and energetic. However, his mom, Anita, noticed he had trouble breathing during physical activities and struggled to sleep through the night. They met with Dr. Zi Yang Jiang, a pediatric otolaryngologist (also known as an ENT specialist) affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

When Dr. Jiang examined Nafil's nose using a camera, he found that Nafil's adenoids were severely inflamed and blocked. After trying steroid nasal sprays, they decided to move forward with surgery.

Zion, who has cerebral palsy, became a candidate for SDR surgery at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital after years of therapy. The program is one of the few in the country offering this advanced procedure, which reduces the abdominal reflexes causing Zion’s muscle tightness. Just three months after surgery, he could stand on his own, and today, he even runs, jumps, and dances.

Jeren Hall’s smile lights up every room he enters. At 17 years old, he is nonverbal, autistic and lives with epilepsy. In 2023, Jeren fell and fractured his knee. During a follow-up visit with the pediatric orthopedic team affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, an X-ray of Jeren’s spine was taken that revealed neuromuscular scoliosis. The team explained that the scoliosis could eventually affect Jeren’s ability to walk and get up on his own.

“He can run and play. Even though he’s nonverbal, he’s very active. When I heard it might stop him from doing those things, I knew we had to get ahead of it,” his mother, Tracey, said.

This past weekend, the NICU team at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center welcomed former patients and their families for a fall festival in the Wolf Park and play area, just outside our Level III NICU and Family Life Center.
