Amelia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in April 2024 and has been undergoing treatment for the past four months.

Amelia's diagnosis came as a shock to her family, as she had not shown signs of decline. “She is so fun, always running and playing, we did not see her with little energy,” her mother, Marialva, said. “But one day we started to see her a little yellow and some bruises on her legs, which seemed unusual to us because she had not hit anything—we brought her to her primary doctor and they started running blood tests.”

Despite her young age, Amelia’s strength and positivity have taught her family an invaluable life lesson. “Her joy, despite her diagnosis, has not gone away," Marialva says. “She is the one who keeps us strong; she has not allowed us to live the reality of her diagnosis.”

By sharing their journey, Marialva hopes to remind others to not lose faith. “To all of the nurses, doctors, child life specialists, assistants, and the entire staff at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital—you have been a great blessing in our lives,” Marialva says. “I know you all make a great effort to dedicate time and love to all of the patients, and I value and appreciate your work.”

Malakai was diagnosed in February 2023 with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma; he began his chemo treatment in June 2023 and has been in remission since July 2023. "We gave Malakai the nickname of Mighty Malakai," his mother, Erika, says. "His strength throughout his diagnosis and treatment gave our family the strength we needed to get through each day."

Through their journey the Herrera’s continued to do their best to live each day as normal as possible. “It is easier said than done, but the strength children have is unbelievably much stronger than adults," Erika says.

By sharing their child’s story they want other families to have faith. "Not all superheroes wear capes; ours wear scrubs," Erika says. "We love our CMHH family and everyone who has been through this journey with us in any kind of way."

In 2020, it was discovered after a routine test that Daniel and Blain's unborn baby was diagnosed with omphalocele—a rare condition where a baby's intestines, liver or other organs protrude outside of the abdomen through the belly button. Blain continued to see her doctors regularly for the remainder of her pregnancy, and on May 11, 2021, Gavin was born.

With the help of the pediatric surgery team affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, they discussed the medical journey ahead, including a detailed plan for surgery to repair the omphalocele.

Michael, age 9, suffered a catastrophic compound fracture in his leg due to an accident, a sight that left his parents shocked. The Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric Transport Team brought Michael to the Texas Medical Center and within hours Michael was in the OR to set his bone which had broken through the skin.

After a few days, Michael received treatment in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber—which utilizes a specialized chamber to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood. The therapy accelerates wound healing by delivering high levels of oxygen to the body’s tissues—a vital factor in the treatment of traumatic injuries like Michael's.

In January, Michael walked back into school with no crutches or wheelchair in a wonderful culmination of his healing journey.
