Is iovera° right for me?

What is it?
iovera° is a safe and innovative pain relief treatment. It temporarily freezes the nerves from sending pain signals to your brain. This process delivers immediate pain relief and can last 90 days.

Who can benefit from iovera°?
Patients who have osteoarthritis pain in the knee or pain in areas such as the hip, shoulder, chest, foot, ankle, spine and more. In addition, patients who are considering knee replacement surgery, avoiding surgery, or who are not candidates for surgery. iovera° treatment can also be given before or after knee replacement surgery to make recovery easier and less painful.

What can I expect in an iovera° treatment?
The iovera° system is a handheld device that allows your doctor to targeted nerves that are causing you pain. The treatment takes about 30 minutes. Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing that allows for easy access to the area. A topical or injected numbing agent is applied to the area. A small probe is inserted into the skin, and a cold zone freezes the targeted nerve. The doctor will repeat this process until the targeted nerves are blocked.

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a structure in the knee that prevents the Tibia (Shin Bone) from sliding in front of the Femur (Thigh Bone). It is important for activities involving jumping, running and cutting and is frequently injured in sports. Rupture of the ligament results in instability, pain and swelling. ACL reconstruction surgery is when tissue graft is fashioned and constructed to replace the ligament. You may need ACL reconstruction surgery if you have an ACL tear and want to return to an active lifestyle. Return to sports can be 6 months or longer depending on your ability to progress in Physical Therapy. Therapy is critical to help you return to sport and to prevent future injuries.

AAO’s knee specialist, Dr. Cristin Mathew, is one of the few surgeons in the Houston area that also performs the ACL Repair procedure with the BEAR Technique, which heals your own injured ACL without reconstruction. Dr. Mathew can evaluate your knee and pain and together can plan your path forward. Link in bio to learn more about the BEAR technique.

Rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in your shoulder that help you lift and rotate your arm. Rotator cuff injuries can be caused by falling on your arm, pinching of the bones or relating to a sports injury.  Rotator cuff problems can be treated at home through icing and resting the shoulder joint, however if your pain is severe and persistent, you may need surgery. Rotator cuff surgery can typically be performed through an arthroscopic repair. Recovery depends on the type of surgery completed and includes a sling, driving limitations and physical therapy.

Did you know that up to 20% of knee replacements continue to have pain after surgery? I believe that the cause of pain is often due to the exchange of bony pain for muscular pain with current traditional surgical approaches. Through his training in minimally invasive surgery and sports medicine background, Dr. Mathew wanted to provide his patients with a faster and less painful recovery while seeking a way to minimize trauma to the knee.
