Warmer weather might mean more fun in the sun, but it also means more pesky bugs such as mosquitoes, ants, and even ticks! Insect repellent products that contain DEET are the most effective at preventing bites and diseases, but should not be used for children under the age of 2. If bitten, avoid scratching and use an ice pack to reduce swelling. If you need further relief, try the following:

local anesthetic products such as benzocaine
anti-itch products containing hydrocortisone
skin protectants such as calamine lotion
Head to the pharmacy today to stock up on insect repellents and bite treatments to ensure your outdoor fun is bug-free!

TRUE or FALSE? Pharmacists recommend that patients take a painkiller like Advil or Tylenol before getting their COVID-19 vaccine.

Answer: FALSE.

We do NOT recommend patients take an anti-inflammatory or pain-killer medication before getting vaccinated as this can cause your blood to thin, increasing your risk of bleeding when you get the injection. Wait until you develop side effects like arm soreness, fever, or a headache before taking a pain-killer or similar medication. Comment below if you got it right or wrong!

The FDA has approved the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 12 to 15! You’re probably wondering if you should get your pr***en or teenager vaccinated, right?

In order to help with that decision, here are some facts about the Pfizer vaccine trials: The trial in this age group involved over 2,000 participants and it ultimately showed a 100% efficacy in preventing COVID-19. The side effects were comparable to those reported in the clinical trials from the 16 year-old-and-up group, such as pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, chills, and fever. Give us a call or send us a text to schedule your vaccine appointment today!

Summer is officially here! However, it is important to abide by the CDC’s COVID-19 safety protocols in order to keep you and your family safe.

Guidelines for Vaccinated Groups

The CDC announced mid-May that fully vaccinated Americans can start resuming activities that they participated in prior to the pandemic. You are no longer required to wear a mask or to social distance, except in places where it is required by state and local laws.

Guidelines for Unvaccinated Groups

Unvaccinated Americans should continue to social distance, wear a mask, and stay away from large groups of people. Try to stick with outdoor activities like the beach, laying out by the pool, or patio dining. Remember, you can start to participate in normal activities after getting fully vaccinated. Give us a call to schedule your shot and get vaccinated today!

Daily sunscreen application is the easiest way to protect yourself from skin cancer, premature aging, and sunburns. Dermatologists and pharmacists recommend the following:

Using products with at least 30 SPF (blocks 96.7% of UVB rays, the primary inducers of skin cancer)
Applying sunblock 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and then reapplying it every 1-2 hours
Integrating some form of sunblock protection into your daily skin care routine
Selecting the right product ultimately depends on your skin type (dry vs oily), the sunblock’s intended use, how easily you burn, and if you have any allergies or irritants. Talk to your pharmacist using the PocketRx app or visit our pharmacy to check out our selection of different sunscreens!

In light of mask mandates changing throughout the country, we want to debunk some common myths on facial coverings:

MYTH - Wearing a mask can cause CO2 poisoning.

FALSE - This is NOT true. There is no scientific evidence that connects cloth masks to carbon monoxide poisoning. Those who feel faint or out of breath when wearing a mask should try to stay home as much as possible and opt for services like curbside pick-up or home delivery.

MYTH - Wearing a cloth mask does not protect me from COVID-19.

FALSE - Properly wearing a cloth face mask is one of the best defenses we have to protect ourselves and others. Face coverings should fit snug over your chin, mouth, and nose and should be worn in public spaces.

MYTH - I don't feel sick so I don't need to wear a mask.

FALSE - Roughly 40% of COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic so it is possible to spread the virus without having any COVID-19 symptoms. Wearing masks will help ensure that you don’t accidentally infect someone who is over the age of 60 and/or someone with an underlying health condition.

There are now 3 COVID-19 vaccines authorized by the FDA and they will be available to the general public by May! It is important that we continue to follow CDC's recommendations until the general population is vaccinated:

Wear a fitted mask over your nose, mouth, and chin in public spaces.
Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for 30 seconds after touching surfaces or after interacting with other people not in your household.
Remember to social distance in public spaces.
Limit unnecessary travel and keep your circle of contacts small.

The United States is currently rolling out COVID-19 vaccines across the country. However, many people are still anxious about what to expect and how effective the vaccines are. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are around 95% effective after both doses have been administered. As for side effects, the CDC has reported injection site pain, possible fatigue, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. These symptoms are normal and a sign that your body’s immune system is mounting the appropriate response to form antibodies. Interested in getting vaccinated?
