Last month HHP students and faculty attended the Texas Chapter American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting in Waco, Texas. The students were able to take a deep dive into the world of sports medicine and get some more insights into developing research topics and educational programs in the field. This year 7 undergraduate students and 5 graduate students attended, each involved in either poster presentations, quiz bowl, or scholarship nominations.
There were 2 quiz bowl teams comprised of 3 undergraduate students compete in a jeopardy style competition between teams from all over Texas to win spot in representing Texas at this year's National ACSM event in Atlanta.
Four students had posters this year where they got the opportunity to present their research findings to other students and professors from school's all over Texas!
Although our quiz bowl teams did not win a spot to Atlanta, Wishal Khan, an HHP Ph.D. candidate won the graduate Student Research Development Award and all shared a great experience attending this year’s TACSM annual meeting.
Not to brag but we have some pretty awesome students in our department. Congratulations to the winners from the 2024 Department of Health and Human Performance Student Excellence Awards!!
Another HHP Games in the books and this year was bigger and better than ever! HHP Games is designed to give students of all degree levels from our department an opportunity to engage with peers and faculty while competing in educational and fun events to obtain scholarships or prizes. We had some new events this year including the wheelchair relay hosted by Adaptive Athletics and the e-sports tournament, as well as couple favorites from last year such as the food brawl and the ping pong tournament. Thank you to all our judges who helped facilitate the event and to Chef Chad MacDonald and his team of chefs from UH Dining Services for coming back out to judge the food brawl. Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to all the students and faculty who participated. We hope you had fun and we look forward to seeing everyone back next fall!#hhpgames2024 #hhp #healthandhumanperformance #studentengagement #universityofhouston #uofh #gocoogs #houston #nutrition #kinesiology #exercisescience

Students from the Research and Innovation in Sports Excellence (RISE) lab teamed up with SEARCH Homeless Services’ House of Tiny Treasures (HTT) to introduce soccer ball mastery skills and games to the children of HTT based on the popular Soccer Starts at Home (SSAH) program. SSAH aims to promote age-appropriate soccer skills that enhance brain development, self-confidence, and academic success while creating a fun school learning environment. HTT compliments this mission because they are an award-winning educational center that provides high-quality education to children ages 2-5 who have experienced poverty. By mastering dynamic drills such as "the Slide" and "the Tick Tock", the children sharpen their foot-eye coordination and ignite a passion for physical activity through positive reinforcement and social interaction.
