Heartfelt Condolences to Our Sister City Karachi
Last weekend, our sister city Karachi was struck by a tragic and devastating fire at Gul Plaza, a major commercial center. Reports indicate that more than 25 precious lives were lost, dozens were injured, and countless families and business owners have suffered irreparable losses.
On behalf of the Houston–Karachi Sister City Association (HKSCA), we extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and the people of Karachi. Houston stands firmly with Karachi during this time of grief and hardship.
This tragedy once again highlights the critical need for emergency preparedness and international cooperation. In the past, HKSCA facilitated the transfer of firefighting equipment valued at several hundred thousand dollars, made possible through the generosity and partnership of the Houston Fire Department. During a formal ceremony, the equipment was handed over by the City of Houston to HKSCA and the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston, to be delivered to the people of Pakistan in the spirit of goodwill and Sister City cooperation.

Mr. M.J. Khan, Former City Council Member & HKSCA Board Member
Mr. Haroon Shaikh, President, HKSCA
Mr. Mohammad Zaheer, Vice President, HKSCA
Dr. Barkat Charania, HKSCA Board Member
HKSCA pursued similar emergency support initiatives in 2022 and has remained actively engaged in humanitarian response efforts, particularly during the 2022 super floods, when historic flooding impacted millions across Pakistan. During that crisis, HKSCA coordinated large-scale relief and rehabilitation efforts, mobilizing significant financial resources and in-kind assistance to support flood-affected communities.
Beyond disaster response, HKSCA has continuously supported Karachi through humanitarian assistance, including flood relief, clean water projects, healthcare support, education and scholarships, environmental initiatives, and community development programs.
We pray for the departed souls, for the swift recovery of the injured, and for strength for all those affected. The Houston–Karachi Sister City Association remains committed to standing with Karachi—not only in times of celebration, but especially in moments of tragedy and need.
