WHAT TO KNOW
Regular physical activity provides important health benefits for chronic disease prevention.

Even 10 minutes more a day would make a difference.
Taking more steps a day also helps lower the risk of premature death from all causes.

SO HOW MUCH EXERCISE DO I NEED?
Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, such as 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Adults also need 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity each week

Despite advances in pharmacologic therapy for RA, many patients continue to experience some measure of ongoing disease activity with the risk of developing resultant disability.

Measures aimed at identifying early active disease and controlling inflammation are essential but may be insufficient to optimize functional capacity and quality of life, and patients may continue to experience problems with physical function, as well as emotional and social function, that are not adequately addressed by providing drug therapy alone.

The major elements of such nonpharmacologic therapy include:

●Patient education
●Psychosocial interventions
●Physical activity and exercise
●Physical and occupational therapy
●Proper nutrition and diet

Please reach out for support for any of the above ongoing problems.

Did you know?
Bone loss is often asymptomatic until a fracture occurs, most commonly in the spine, hip, or wrist.
• A 10% decrease in bone density can double fracture risk.
• Vertebral fractures may occur without significant trauma and can lead to height loss, kyphosis, and chronic pain.

Early detection through DEXA scanning and evidence-based therapies (including bisphosphonates, denosumab, and anabolic agents) are key to reducing fracture risk and maintaining quality of life.

At Rheumatology Center Of Houston, we specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis.

Protect your bones. Protect your future.

Our board certified rheumatologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple types of arthritis, bones and muscle disorders.

May is Lupus Awareness Month
Lupus is more than fatigue or joint pain—it’s a complex autoimmune disease that can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, brain, and more. No two cases are alike, and early recognition is key.

Why is My Toe Swollen and Painful?
A swollen, painful toe can be more than just an injury—it might be a sign of an underlying rheumatologic condition. Here are some common causes we see in the clinic:
1. Gout – Sudden, severe pain in the big toe? Gout is a type of arthritis caused by uric acid crystal buildup—often triggered by diet, dehydration, or stress.
2. Psoriatic Arthritis – This autoimmune condition can cause toe swelling (called “sausage digits” or dactylitis) along with skin changes.
3. Rheumatoid Arthritis – RA doesn’t just affect fingers. It can cause joint inflammation in the toes, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
4. Infection (Septic Arthritis or Cellulitis) – Especially if there’s redness, warmth, and fever. Urgent attention is needed.
5. Trauma or Overuse – Sometimes, it’s a sprain, stress fracture, or repetitive strain from footwear or activity.

Don’t ignore toe pain—it could be your body’s way of signaling something deeper.
