The Alexis Wood Lab at BCM

The Alexis Wood Lab at BCM At Baylor College of Medicine, the Alexis Wood Lab explores how food, family life, and genetics work together to influence health. My views are my own.

We work with families to learn how early choices can support healthy growth and lifelong wellness.

Meet the Wood Lab! 👋🏼

Spotlight #2: Tomi Ibikunle, Research Coordinator I

Tomi recently graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Public Health. Tomi is one of the research coordinators in our lab working on the “Metabolomic Investigation of Nutrition and Development in Toddlers” (MIND: Toddlers) Study, which focuses on how diet impacts the cognitive development of toddlers.

Outside of work, Tomi enjoys a good book, photography, and strength training. She also enjoys exploring the food scene in Houston with family and friends.

The Wood Lab would not be the same without Tomi’s willingness to help those around her and her ability to problem solve! 🧪💪🏼🥼

Our group was delighted to participate in this recently published paper, looking at whether sleep-disordered breathing might influence what people eat over time: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352721825001664!

It was found that adults with breathing difficulties during sleep tended to have a less healthy diet nearly 8 years later, even after accounting for their original diet and lifestyle! 😴🥗🏥

Meet the Wood Lab! ✨

Spotlight: Tobias Kornfein, Research Intern

Tobias is an undergraduate student at Rice University studying public health. As part of our lab, he analyzes large-scale data from the “The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young” (TEDDY) study to identify associations between dietary intake and plasma metabolites in toddlers. Tobias is grateful for Dr. Wood’s mentorship in Statistics and appreciates being part of this incredibly skilled and welcoming team!

Outside of his studies, Tobias enjoys long walks on the beach, time with family, and trumpeting passionately in Mariachi Luna Llena, Rice’s premier Mariachi. But as a college student, he is most proud of his reasonable bedtime. Tobias plans on applying to graduate school next Fall.

Dr. Wood thoroughly enjoys mentoring the next generation of scientists like Tobias! 📈👨‍💻📊
