What Your Smartwatch Can—and Can’t—Tell You About Your Heart

Smartwatches can detect irregular rhythms, measure heart rate, and even record an ECG—but they’re not foolproof.
As Dr. Patrick Kee, cardiologist at Vital Heart & Vein, shared with Parade.com, here are a few things to keep in mind:
They don’t monitor continuously unless prompted
ECGs require you to remain still for accuracy
Readings can be “inconclusive” or inaccurate during motion or outside normal ranges
Sensors may be affected by sweat, tattoos, skin tone, or a loose fit
Smartwatches are powerful tools, but they don’t replace medical-grade equipment. If you’re getting frequent alerts—or have symptoms—follow up with a cardiologist.

❤️ Ever wondered what an ablation is?
In this video, Dr. Justin Saunders, cardiac electrophysiologist at Vital Heart & Vein, explains how catheter ablation works to treat certain heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).

Using thin wires called catheters, we can both map the heart’s rhythm and precisely target the problem area—using heat or cold —to stop the arrhythmia at its source.
At Vital Heart & Vein, this is just one of the advanced procedures our expert team provides to restore heart rhythm and improve quality of life.

✨ Vital Heart & Vein’s own Dr. Patrick Kee, MD, Ph.D. was recently featured in Parade.com, sharing insight on the best time of day to exercise for your heart.
While morning jogs may get the spotlight, new research suggests evening workouts could have the greatest benefits for heart health—helping lower the risk of heart disease and even increasing longevity.
“An evening workout may do more than help you shake off the stress of the day — it might actually help you live longer,” says Dr. Kee.

Every 33 seconds, someone in the U.S. dies from cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Bennet George says it’s not just smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol you need to watch—three often-overlooked risk factors are just as important:
Sleep – Poor sleep increases heart strain.
Stress – Chronic stress drives up blood pressure and inflammation.
Inflammation – Refined, processed foods trigger inflammation, a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.
Your diet is critical. Choosing whole, balanced foods over processed ones can lower inflammation and protect your heart.

When it comes to heart health, some risks are out of your control—like age and genetics.
But Dr. Khaled Khalaf, cardiologist at Vital Heart & Vein, says the big three risk factors can be managed:
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia)
High blood sugar (diabetes)
The good news? Diet and exercise directly help control all three. And when needed, medications play a key role too.
Know your numbers, talk to your doctor, and take steps today—because prevention is the best treatment.

August is National Wellness Month, and cardiologist Dr. Nidal Ganim reminds us that heart health starts with our minds.
Through mindfulness, Dr. Ganim lost weight himself and now encourages others to:
• Slow down at mealtime and listen to hunger cues
• Reduce stress to lower blood pressure and inflammation
• Be intentional with daily habits that support long-term health
With heart disease still the leading cause of death in the U.S., these simple practices can make a powerful difference.

08/19/2025

Your family health history plays a major role in understanding your risk for heart disease—sometimes even more than lifestyle alone.
Dr. Cindy John, cardiologist at Vital Heart & Vein, explains what to watch for:
Family history – If a parent or sibling developed heart disease early (before 55 in men, 65 in women), your risk is higher.
Autoimmune diseases – These conditions can also increase risk.
Traditional risk factors – Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and inactivity remain critical to monitor.
Knowing your family’s health history is the first step toward prevention. Talk to your doctor about your risk and what you can do today to protect your heart.

High blood pressure is on the rise—now affecting 1 in 2 adults—and it can take years off your life if left unchecked.
Dr. Nidal Ganim, cardiologist with Vital Heart & Vein, shared his best advice:
Know your numbers – anything above 130/80 is considered high.
Prevention matters – stress, worry, poor diet, smoking, and inactivity all play a role.
Mind–body connection – negative emotions like anxiety and stress release cortisol, raising blood pressure. Feeling good isn’t just nice—it’s healthy.
Regularly check your blood pressure at home or with your doctor. If it’s consistently high, don’t wait—talk to your doctor about ways to bring it down.
