Next week we will settle into restoration. We’ve worked hard this month cultivating our prone backbends and inversions, and now it’s time to rest. Practice will include more active shapes in their supported versions, as well as more restful āsanas. We’ll explore some breath work and introspective practice towards the end of class, and you’ll leave feeling revitalized and nourished. Bring your own eye pillow!

Join us:

See you tomorrow in Advancing Your Āsana and next week on your mat! Have a beautiful weekend.

Advancing Your Āsana delves into postures that require steadfast focus. This Saturday, we will continue our work on strengthening our back extensions in the prone backbends and continue it into Urdhva Dhanurasana (wheel pose), Pincha Mayurasana (forearm stand), and Vrschikasana (scorpion).

We’re continuing our work of building strength in our back extensions or “backbends” (as they are commonly called) this week. Through drills and asanas, we will recruit the erector muscles, gluteal muscles, hamstrings and other muscle groups in the back for stabilization. We’ll also continue to incorporate inversions to build familiarity and mastery in these important postures.

Join us on your mat! Not just for your practice but for an opportunity to truly explore the wonders of your body and, ultimately, your life.

For Study & Restore this week, we’re discussing the types of vrittis (thought patterns) that the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali suggest are common to all of us. If we understand them as temporary and constant, they may not cause us suffering. The quieting of these vrittis allows our true nature and radiance to be visible once again — this is the goal of yoga.

These vrttis are covered in Sutras 1.5-1.11, should you have a copy of the Yoga Sutras and want to read ahead (optional). You are welcome to come with no preparation or prior knowledge of yoga philosophy!

After our discussion, we’ll prepare for yoga nidra, a guided meditation designed to move you into deep relaxation. You’ll get some well-deserved rest, and you might even be able to observe the kinds of thoughts we talked about as they begin to settle in your yoga nidra practice.

Next week’s asana classes will be about continuing our work of understanding how to create a strong backbend. We’ll work on this by segmenting the work in the back, engaging the muscles along the spine, and adding in the movement in the shoulder blades.

Postures you can expect to see in class include: locust (salabhasana), crocodile (makarasana), cobra (bhujangasana), and upward-facing dog (urdhva mukha svanasana). I’ll include all sorts of other postures to make this a well-rounded practice and give you something to explore.

Come practice!

See you on the mat!

Join me at Atha Yoga this month to explore one of my favorite pose categories: the prone backbends (which in my book include ustrasana / camel and purvottanasana / tabletop with straight legs). These poses are super duper great for back strength and posture and overall quality of life. We will incorporate work on our inversions as always and other pose categories that make sense to create a balanced experience.

Mondays 630 pm in studio
Tuesdays 10 am in studio / 6 pm on zoom

This month I also will be teaching a 2 hour intensive called Advancing Your Āsana on Saturday, February 24th from 2-4 pm in studio only. That class requires a different pass than the regular classes. Study and Restore this month is on Thursday, February 12th at the usual time, 6 pm and it’s streaming live from the studio. Join us in person or via Zoom.

It’s a space where we explore shapes and consider how we relate in our own bodies to those shapes, and through the shapes to our inner world. It’s an all-levels class, and I offer modifications and explorations for everyone. If you have any questions please message me!

There are lots of options for how you spend your precious time out there. This option is one that I hope helps you show up for all those other ways. Join us if Alignment Practice sounds like something that would meet you where you need it to💗
