Medical experts are urging people to pay attention to symptoms that could signal bowel cancer, a disease often missed because its early warning signs can be mistaken for less serious conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or digestive discomfort.
Doctors say common red flags include changes in bowel habits, such as going more or less often, persistent blood in your poo, and feeling like your bowel isn’t fully emptying, even if these symptoms seem mild at first.
Other warning signs can include unexplained weight loss, persistent bloating or abdominal pain, and feeling unusually tired or weak, especially if they persist for several weeks without explanation.
Because these signs can resemble everyday issues like diet changes or mild stomach problems, many people don’t realise they could be serious. Early detection is crucial: when bowel cancer is caught at an early stage, treatment outcomes are significantly better.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms for longer than a few weeks, health professionals recommend speaking with a doctor as soon as possible for proper screening and diagnosis.
