BMED Lab

BMED Lab The BMED Lab (Biobehavioral Mechanisms Explaining Disparities) at Rice University. MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The BMED Lab integrates theories and methods from psycho-oncology, developmental psychology, psychoneuroimmunology, and autonomic psychophysiology to understand how the mind and body interact to affect those confronted by stressful life events such as cancer or the loss of a loved one. The BMED Lab collaborates closely on research protocols with both Baylor College of Medicine and U.T.

Congratulations to Project REACH at the Rice University Institute of Health Resilience and Innovation for holding a successful PAC meeting to support the study looking to explore the experiences of caregivers for spouses living with dementia! Our study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, is actively in the recruitment and data collection process. We aim to highlight the cultural and community contexts that shape the caregiving experience and to inform interventions that can effectively support caregivers.

We are excited to spread the word that Rice University has launched the Institute of Health Resilience and Innovation (IHRI), which will study the lifetime impacts of health stressors and develop targeted interventions to improve well-being across diverse populations! The institute is directed by our very own lab director Dr. Christopher Fagundes, along with deputy director Dr. Tony Brown and executive director Kristi English. The IHRI will lead the way for research examining the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that shape health and resilience, and we are truly excited to see the amazing work that comes from it!

โ€œEven though marriages can change dramatically when one spouse has dementia, feeling valued and understood can make a significant difference in a relationship.โ€

Check out this Rice News post, featuring graduate student Vincent Lai and BMED Lab Director Dr. Christopher Fagundes, where they discuss the critical role that marital relationships play in the mental and physical health of caregivers for spouses living with dementia!

Congratulations to Dr. Kelly Brice for receiving the Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH National Research Service Award fellowship (F32)! She is investigating the relationships between emotion regulation, psychological and physiological indicators of stress, and cognitive performance.

Check out this new paper published in Comprehensive Psychoneuroendocrinology, first-authored by BMED graduate student Vincent Lai! https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S266649762400047X

In this study, among ADRD spousal caregivers, marital distress was linked to more depressive symptoms and higher inflammation. However, feeling cared for, understood, and appreciated by spouses may help offset these associations.

Congratulations to Vincent and co-authors on this awesome accomplishment! ๐ŸŽ‰

Please share!

The Biobehavioral Mechanisms Explaining Disparities Lab at Rice University is seeking student research assistants (undergrad, grad, post-bac, etc.) for a study funded by The National Institutes of Health.

The purpose of our study is to find out more about what predicts and contributes to the mental and physical health of individuals who are caregivers of a spouse with dementia. The long-term goal of this work is to make informed future interventions that can help improve caregiversโ€™ quality of life.

Working within psychoneuroimmunology, the BMED lab uses theories and methods from clinical, social, and developmental health psychology to examine how stress "gets under the skin" to impact diseases of older adulthood, such as cardiovascular disease, some cancers, and cognitive decline. We are also interested in how the immune system regulates neuronal function to influence mood and health behaviors. Our theoretical work has focused on adopting attachment theory to understand how attachment security can buffer the negative consequences of current and past life stressors. We also develop theoretical interventions to improve the adverse physical health consequences of stress.

We can potentially offer recommendation letters, 1:1 exposure to running human subjects in a research setting (patient contact hours), course credit, work-study, potential for academic mentorship as a senior member of the lab, phlebotomy training and certification, research poster presentations, and authorship opportunities.

Interested students should complete the attached lab application and send it to Patty Morales (pm22@rice.edu) along with an updated resume/CV.
