UPDATED OBITUARY--JOE HAMILTON, Sr
Mantee---Joseph Lee Hamilton, Sr., 80, passed away at his home in Mantee on Friday, September 19, 2025. Born May 15, 1945 in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Regger Hamilton and the late Ruby Alberta Fowler Hamilton. Joe attended Greenville High School, and he was of Baptist Faith. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Nancy Canoy Hamilton, and they have spent 55 wonderful years together. Joe served as a route salesman for Turner Dairy for over 20 years until his retirement. He was a natural born salesman; He never met a stranger, and he had love for every person he interacted with.

Joe also loved the simple things in life. He and his wife were hobby farmers, and raised many heads of cattle together. He loved to go fishing and camp out with his sons throughout their childhood years. He was also a homebody, and he loved to get out and do things around the house.

Joe was loved dearly by his friends and family, and his long-lasting memory will forever be cherished in their hearts.

Southern Funeral Home has the honor of serving the Hamilton family.

A Funeral Service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 2:00pm at Southern Funeral Home with Bro. Cody Childress officiating. There will also be a Visitation on Sunday from 12:00pm until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Mantee.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kolby Earrey, Nicholas Thibadeau, Jacob Swaggerty, Dakota Almarode, Devan Almarode, Nathan Patterson, and Duane Taylor.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeff Hamilton, James Hamilton, and William Hamilton.

Joe’s family would also like to extend a special thanks to Kayla Johnson, his main caregiver with Legacy Hospice, and social worker Stephanie Ellis, also with Legacy Hospice, for their loving care and moral support during this difficult time.

He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Nancy Hamilton of Mantee; sons, James Riddle (Beverly) of Grandberry, TX, Joe Hamilton, Jr. (Jessica) of Van Vleet, James Hamilton of Mantee; Jeff Hamilton (Elizabeth) of Houston, MS, and William Hamilton of Mantee; daughters, Tammy Smith of Houston, TX, Wendy Horning (Patrick) of Sun Lakes, AZ, and Melissa Berry of Wiggins; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; special caretaker and grandson, Dakota Joel Almarode (Crissy Moore); and special granddaughter, his namesake, Aunna Jolee Hamilton.

Houston-Charles Allen "Deke" Quick, 62, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at his home in Thorn. He was born in Bennettsville, SC on May 18, 1963 to Willis Allen Quick, Sr. and Pearl Jones Quick. He attended schools in Bennettsville, SC and worked as a painter in construction until his health declined.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 3:00 at Southern Funeral Home in Houston. Officiating will be Bro. Tommy Havard and Bro. Mark Coleman. Burial will follow in Ellezy Cemetery in Vardaman. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 13 from 1:00 until service time at 3:00 at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers are Eric Vinson, Shane Smith, Chris Hudson, Zach Hopson, Billy Coleman and JT Coleman. Honorary pallbearers are Willis "Chill" Quick and Dooley Taylor.
Deke was a devoted husband to his wife of six years, Tabitha. He enjoyed traveling to South Carolina to visit his family. The biggest highlight of his days was spending time with his eleven grandchildren. He also loved fishing, taking walks to the creek, and setting out crawfish traps. He always had a way to make everyone around him laugh; from making up funny birthday songs to telling his wife stories and memories from his past. No matter what was going on around him or how he was feeling, he always walked around with a smile on his face and showed love to those around him. This is not goodbye, this is until we see you again.
He is survived by his wife Tabitha Coleman Quick of Houston; his daughters, Christina (Eric) Vinson of Pontotoc, Jessica Langston of Calhoun City, Breanna (Shane) Smith of Houston, and Tiffany (Chris) Hudson of Houston; his brother, Willis Allen Quick, Jr. of Georgia; his sisters Alice (Dooley) Taylor, Jackie Quick, and Patricia Quick all of South Carolina and Doris Quick of Georgia; his brothers-in-law, JT (Sarah) Coleman of Houlka and Billy (Nina) Coleman of Houston; his grandchildren, Kaleb Clark, Jr., Serenity May Langston, Liam Coleman, Travis Griffin, Wyatt Hudson, Lincoln Hudson, Anna Kelly Smith, Vanessa Verell Lucas Vinson, Caleb Vinson, and Caylee Grace Vinson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis Quick Sr, and Pearl Jones Quick; his brothers, James Quick and David Quick; his sister, Angie Quick; his mother-in-law; Sandra Coleman; and his fathers-in-law, Darris Coleman and James Gaspard.

Vardaman-Roger Dale Hodnett, 72, passed away at his home in Vardaman on Sunday, August 31, 2025. He was born on December 24, 1952 to Hoskin Hodnett and Ruby Criddle Hodnett.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 2:00 at Southern Funeral Home in Houston with Bro. Johnny Cherry officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 4 from 12:00 until service time at 2:00 at the funeral home.
Roger retired from International Paper in 2016 where he worked for over 40 years. Roger loved deer hunting and listening to the deer dogs run on Magnum Hunting Club land, where he was a long time member. He was also a member of the Vardaman Masonic Lodge for many years. He served as a volunteer firefighter in Vardaman for several years until he retired due to health problems.
Roger and his friend, Wayne Fugett, went on many fishing trips to Grenada Lake. After Wayne died, Roger would go to the old Hwy 8 backwaters on Saturday just to watch people fishing. On Sunday he would go to the Graysport Crossing and the Gums Crossing bridges and boat landings He put his fishing reels up after Wayne died.
Roger always wanted to own a tractor like all the farmers around Vardaman. He finally was able to buy a John Deer tractor after retiring. He used it to repair people's driveways in Vardaman. He would haul dirt and rocks all over town fixing driveways. He never would take any money for his work. Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Roger is survived by his sisters, Shirley Ann Davis of Houston and Ruby Nell Morton Hendrick of Mayhew; his brother-in-law, Steve Pettit of Houston; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoskin and Ruby Hodnett; his brothers, Thomas Hodnett and Lester Hodnett; and his sister Brenda Darlene Pettit.

Houston-James Zane "Jim" Clark, Jr., 73, left his earthly home on Monday, August 25, 2025 with his family at his side. He was born on April 1, 1952 in Fort Worth, TX to James Z Clark, Sr., and Marion Celestine Mooneyham Clark. He was a member of New Parkersburg Missionary Baptist Church.

Jim lived most of his life in Houston, MS besides when he was in the military. He served his country during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Norfork, VA , he met the love of his life, Ava Karyn Moore. They married in Virginia Beach on Valentine's Day in 1975. He worked as a tool and dye maker and retired from Day-Bright Lighting in Tupelo after 27 years of service. Jim was a Master Mason in Houston Masonic Lodge #67 and served two terms as Master of the Lodge. He had a passion for riding motorcycles, even after being in a body cast for 3 months after a motorcycle wreck. Jim and his wife toured all over the United States on his motorcycle. He was an outdoorsman that looked for any excuse to be outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. One of his hobbies was reloading ammunition. His faith was very important to him and he loved God and serving Him. Jim lived life to the fullest and leaves behind many fond memories for his family to cherish.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ava Karyn Moore Clark of Houston; his son, William "Bill" Arron Owen (Mary) of Pontotoc; his grandson, Clark Owen; a special niece Renee Vance of Tupelo, great-nieces, Kadie Griffin (Drew) and Katelyn "Sissy" Mullins (Bryce); great-great niece, Evie Griffin, and many cousins, including a special cousin, James "Jimmy" C. Clark.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Z Clark, Sr. and Marion Clark, and a brother, Bobby. Clark.

Woodland-Victor Maurice Hooks, 67, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. He was born in Greenwood, MS on February 17, 1958 to Maurice Hooks and Yvonne Daves Moreman. Victor graduated from West Tallahatchie High School in Webb, MS. He spent most of his life in Greenwood. Victor moved to Chickasaw County in 2005 to be closer to his grandchildren. After moving to Chickasaw County, he met the love of his life, Doris Smith. They married on July 7, 2007 and had 18 wonderful years together. He loved his grandchildren deeply and they were an important part of his life, helping his son care for them. He loved riding his side-by-side. He also enjoyed watching his "bucket garden" grow while getting others to help take care of it. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind many fond memories for them to cherish.

Billy Joe Dobbins, 61, passed away peacefully at his home in Woodland on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. He was born in Greenville, MS on April 3, 1964 to Bobby Ray Dobbins and Jewell Johnson Dobbins. Billy was known for his unwavering willingness to assist anyone in need and his readiness to lend a hand. Despite losing the ability to perform many daily activities in later years, his spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to impact those around him in a positive way. Billy spent his career at Franklin Corporation, where his dedication and hard work left a lasting mark. He was an active member of the New Wine Fellowship, contributing to his community through his faith and service.
His passions included playing pool with friends, fishing, and golfing. Most important to him was spending quality time with his grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. Billy's legacy of kindness and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him. His ability to help others and his involvement in various activities enriched the lives of many.

Houlka-Joyce Nadine Martin Washington, 62, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at North MS Medical Center in Pontotoc. She was born on June 3, 1963 in Ohio to Jesse "Jake" Martin and Virginia Duncan Martin. She was a member of Schooner Valley Baptist Church. Joyce graduated from Houston High School, Class of 1981. She was currently employed at Delta Furniture Manufacturing in Pontotoc. She married the love of her life, Sammy Washington, on July 1, 1995 and they enjoyed almost 30 years together raising their family. She liked being outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. Joyce's favorite thing to do was going to her "happy place", a cabin on the Skuna River in Grenada. She spent much time there fishing. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother that will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Virginia Martin; her brothers, Edward "S**g" Martin and Calvin Martin.
