As we pause to reflect on events of September 11, 2001, Memorial Hermann locations across Houston lowered their U.S. flags to half-staff in remembrance of all who lost their lives, including EMS providers, firefighters and first responders. We also honor the countless others who are still dealing with illnesses from their time working at Ground Zero and veterans who answered the call to serve in the military after the attacks.

Each location also has a special U.S. flag that was flown over the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. These flags are kept and displayed throughout the year as our tribute to the unwavering courage, selflessness and sacrifice demonstrated by first responders at the scene and those who help us save lives every day.

Today, we commemorate the lives of three Memorial Hermann Life Flight® crew members who we lost 25 years ago: Flight Paramedic Charles “Mac” Atteberry, Jr., Flight Nurse Silvia L. “Lynn” Ethridge and pilot John Pittman, Jr.

On July 17, 1999, a Messerschmit-Bolkow-Blohm BK-117-B2 helicopter, N110HH, operating as LifeFlight 1, impacted terrain following the separation of a main rotor blade during an approach to an unmanned fueling site near Fresno, Texas.

Examination of the helicopter revealed that one of the four main rotor blades separated due to the failure of the tension-torsion strap, which secured the blade to the main rotor head. The tension-torsion strap had accumulated a total of 7,815 flight hours and 35,971 flights at the time that it failed. It had been in service since the helicopter was manufactured in 1987. Following the accident, a life limit of 120 months or 25,000 flights (whichever comes first) was established for the tension-torsion straps.

The call sign LifeFlight 1, attached to tail number N110HH, was retired from service. We honor these crew members for their service to the Houston community.

Dennis Vaughan was headed to a doctor’s appointment. But before they left the house, his wife found him seated with his head slumped over — he had passed out. He was rushed to the hospital where it was determined that he’d had an aortic dissection. After this diagnosis, Vaughan was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center by LifeFlight for a life-saving emergency surgery.

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Led by the Memorial Hermann EMS Program, our campuses across Houston lowered their U.S. flags to half-staff in remembrance of the EMS providers, firefighters and first responders who lost their lives to save others that day, and the countless others who are still dealing with illnesses from their time working at Ground Zero.

Several of our campus locations were presented with a special U.S. flag that was flown over the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. These flags will be kept and displayed throughout the year as our tribute to the unwavering courage, selflessness and sacrifice demonstrated by first responders at the scene and those who help us save lives every day.

As we pay tribute to the past, we also carry a spirit of hope into the future.

Today, we remember three Memorial Hermann Life Flight® crew members who lost their lives 24 years ago: Flight Paramedic Charles “Mac” Atteberry, Jr., Flight Nurse Silvia L.

The helicopter was making a VFR approach to a fueling site when witnesses observed components of the main rotor system separate from the helicopter. Subsequently, the helicopter entered an uncontrollable descent and impacted the ground.
