Happy Women's History Month! 💙

This March, we're reading Nurse.org's piece "5 Nurse Leaders To Honor During Women's History Month."

In the piece, Angelina Walker writes:

"Women in nursing have made significant contributions to the fields of medicine and healthcare. These nurses helped lay the foundation for what nursing has become today!"

Kelly's Maxim story is full circle. 💙💙💙

18 years ago, in a hospital room, Kelly faced unimaginable uncertainty as a new mother.

Kelly's son, Lukas, was born at just 25 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 10 ounces, and measuring under 10 inches long. Doctors gave him only a 25% chance of survival. From the very beginning, Lukas faced extraordinary challenges.

Lukas required intubation within a day and needed frequent resuscitation. His condition was complex and fragile; he was born with fused eyelids, underdeveloped ears, and extremely delicate skin. Kelly watched as her son grew inside an incubator, unable to hold or even touch him during those earliest days.

At just a month old, Lukas faced another life-threatening complication: necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe intestinal infection. That night, he was resuscitated 22 times.

For Kelly, it was a turning point.

"That evening, I realized that my tiny baby was literally fighting for his life and mine and he would not only get through this but grow to be the strongest kid I knew!"

His first year of life was spent almost entirely in the hospital, including every major holiday, from Thanksgiving to Easter.

As Lukas prepared for discharge, Kelly was introduced to the idea of home healthcare, something she had never previously considered.

Through Maxim Healthcare Services, Kelly and her family found not only skilled clinical support but also compassionate partners in Lukas' care.

The nurses who entered their home became an essential part of Lukas' growth and development. They managed his medical needs, including medications and G-tube care, and also supported his physical, occupational, and speech therapy exercises in ways that felt natural and engaging.

They read to him. They played with him. They taught his parents how to support his development every step of the way.

"The nurses helped Lukas every single minute they were in our home."

"Leah Hernandez is a 9-month-old baby living with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease affecting newborns.
Born premature at 29 weeks, Leah depends on a gastrostomy tube for nutrition, a tracheostomy to maintain her airway and a ventilator for breathing support. She and her family live in Sacramento and rely on private duty nursing, an in-home healthcare service for medically fragile patients.

A lack of available nurses delayed Leah's return home by several months, because of Medi-Cal's lack of investment in private duty nursing.

Instead of coming home, Leah was discharged to a pediatric nursing home in the Bay Area — more than two hours away from her family — where she remained for several months."

What's it like working for Maxim Behavioral? 🤔💭

Meet Tina, a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) in one of our Maryland offices. "I have this thing when I go into a client's home: Yes, I am showing up for work, but I'm walking into their home. I'm in their world." 🌎✨

Tina has worked in human services, mental health services and addiction recovery.

With several family members diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), she was motivated to learn more about ASD and the evidence‑based services that support individuals and their families. She made the switch to become an RBT about three years ago.

💙 During each session, Tina is intentional about providing her full attention and support to her client. She focuses on creating an environment based on trust and mutual respect.

Her work with her client is a two-way-street – while she teaches them, they've taught her so much in return, especially patience.

💙 "They've shown me they can go a little deeper. The way they try is what gets me. They often really want to try and get frustrated when they can't do something. It's okay when they can't do something, but it's amazing that they try… My client blows my mind every day."

💡What's an "authorized representative"?
➡️ A DEEOIC authorized representative is a person a claimant can appoint in writing to handle their claim with the Department of Labor's Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC).
📂 The representative can receive and respond to correspondence, access case files, present evidence, and make arguments, but they typically cannot sign documents for payment or initiate the claim without a specific legal authority like a Power of Attorney.

Misconception: Changing providers can discontinue or change your existing benefits.
Fact: You can change or choose a different provider at any time. It's your right has a patient to choose your provider.

Meet Abby, one of our patients in Chattanooga, Tennessee. "She's a little pistol and has overcome a lot of difficulties from birth until now," Abby's dad Nate told us in a recent interview.

➡️ Abby was born with Pentalogy of Cantrell – a rare, congenital disorder that created at least five different birth defects. "She had her first open heart surgery at 4 months and received her trach at 6 months," her dad recalls, "Her last birth defect surgery was at age 3, where they repaired her stomach omphalocele and placed a feeding port. She currently still has a feeding tube, and we are working with her about feeds by mouth, but is off her ventilator and oxygen."

💙 Abby is also nonverbal. "She may not communicate with words, but she can communicate in her own way and always gets her point across. She loves music, being sung to, and her favorite TV show, Peppa Pig. She would stay outside all day if she could, and loves car rides."

🩺 We asked Abby's dad how life has been since their Maxim nurse joined the team:
"Abby's mom had to go on a 7-month Military deployment. Maxim has been great when issues arise, and has paid close attention to detail, acting quickly and accordingly."
