𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆?

That’s a question I ask on every intake form.

“Are you more focused on relaxation — or on addressing a specific area of concern?”

And a lot of the time, the answer is… both.

The other day I had a new client come in.
Neck, shoulder, and upper back pain. Old injury, made worse by stress.
She marked “tissue work” as her top priority — but also said she needed a mental break.

In her notes, she wrote:
“I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I need help with the pain… but I also just need a break. I’m really looking forward to having 90 minutes completely to myself.”

When she got here, she told me more.
High-pressure job.
A husband dealing with mental health issues.
Two kids.
And that feels so heavy.

Sometimes “I need deep work” and “I need rest” aren’t in conflict — they’re both true.

It’s about not being needed for a little while.
It’s about someone taking care of you.

That’s the priority.

I’ve been slowly moving away from calling what I do “deep tissue.”
Actually, I see a lot of massage therapists doing the same — and I’m glad that’s the vibe we’re taking into 2026.

Not because the work isn’t deep (it absolutely is), but because what most people think that means isn’t what I actually do.

For a lot of people, “deep tissue” means intense, painful, or aggressive pressure.
But depth isn’t about force — it’s about effectiveness.

Working slow gives your nervous system time to adjust.
Working with intention lets the fascia actually respond.
Working smarter keeps both of us from burning out.

So if you come in looking for “deep tissue,” you’ll still get depth — but it’ll be the kind that helps your body release, not brace.

🦶🏻 I’m focused on creating pressure your body can actually receive.
And that’s the difference

“It’s nothing, it’s just a little annoying.”

I hear this often during check-ins. Usually followed by a shrug, as if what you’re feeling is actually nothing.
“It’s not painful.”
“It doesn’t stop me.”
“It’s just annoying.”

When I started noticing this pattern, I wanted to know why people do this.
👉 Tough-it-out conditioning.
Many of us were raised to believe you don’t complain unless something’s really bad. If it’s not excruciating, we convince ourselves it doesn’t count.
👉 Fear of looking weak… or admitting you’re aging.
For athletes, lifters, and honestly a lot of adults in general, admitting something feels off can feel like admitting you’re slipping, aging, or not as capable as you used to be. It’s easier to brush it off than to face what it might mean.

Here’s the truth:
Those “annoying little things” are often the first signs something in your body is asking for help. And if you’ve walked through my door, you’ve done so for a reason.

So let’s address it.

When older people say, “Enjoy them while they’re young”—they’re talking about your knees and hips.

I’ve been dealing with hip pain for about a month or two now.
And like a lot of you, I’ve tried the whole lineup: massage, chiropractor, mobility work.

Here’s the truth—massage helps, chiropractic helps, but the thing that’s making the biggest difference? Consistent mobility work.

Because pain isn’t always about something being “out of place.”
A lot of the time, it’s about something not moving the way it should.

👉 Massage helps reduce tension, calm the nervous system, and make it easier for those joints to move.
👉 Mobility work keeps the changes going once you’re off the table.

If your hips (or knees, or back) are yelling at you—don’t wait until it’s a daily struggle. Massage + mobility is one of the simplest ways to keep your body from feeling older than it is.

New hips, who dis? Massage at The Elm isn’t JUST about relaxation, it’s about moving better, feeling stronger, and walking out like a new version of yourself 💃🕺

If you knew my barefoot massage work in 2017, 2018, 2019, or even 2020—you don’t know my work now.

I say this a lot: a massage practice is just that—a practice.
It evolves. It refines. It gets sharper with time.

Here’s what’s changed in the way I work:

🦶🏻 I’ve slowed down.
A lot. Fascia and the nervous system don’t just like slow—they thrive on it. They respond to depth, warmth, and intention. Real change happens when the work gives them time to respond.

🦶🏻 I dial in.
Instead of throwing every stroke I know at your body, I use the ones that are most effective. Precision > variety.

🦶🏻 I ask questions.
My intake isn’t just paperwork—it’s where you set the tone. You tell me what hurts, what your goals are, whether you’re here for treatment or relaxation. And I tailor the session to you.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲?

🦶🏻 It’s sustainable.
I’ve been doing massage for over a decade, and I know what constant wear and tear on a therapist’s body can do. Barefoot work lets me deliver deep, targeted pressure without wrecking my own joints and hands. I can work with more control, more intention, and still be doing this years from now.

🦶🏻 It’s deeper without being harsh.
Feet cover more surface area than hands or elbows, so the pressure sinks in evenly instead of jabbing. That means your nervous system stays calm enough to actually let the tissue change, instead of locking down and guarding.

🦶🏻 It’s just better for certain bodies.
Big, strong, dense muscle? Chronic tension that never seems to release? Barefoot massage lets me meet that tissue where it’s at—deep enough to create change, but without the “fight” that sometimes happens with other approaches.

And it’s fun. There’s nothing quite like the grounded, fluid control of using my feet to make real changes in how you move and feel.

So if you’ve been chasing deep tissue and leaving underwhelmed, maybe it’s time to try the version that was built for it.

So why not barefoot massage?
