An emergency blanket
A breathing barrier with a one-way valve
An instant cold compress
Two pairs of large sized nonlatex gloves
Two hydrocortisone ointment packets
One 3-inch gauze roll (roller) bandage
A 4-inch-wide roller bandage
Five 3 x 3-inch sterile gauze pads

Understanding the difference between a watch and a warning for dealing with inclement weather is an important step in staying prepared.

A watch indicates that the right conditions are present for a specific threat to possibly develop. A warning means those conditions have combined and the specific threat is occurring. The graphic below illustrates the concept with a taco threat. The taco watch has all the ingredients available, but that doesn't mean a taco WILL happen. The taco warning is that the ingredients are together and a taco is formed.

The final step to make an emergency plan is to practice it. This can help it identify anything else not considered that should have been. It also makes sure everyone knows how to do what needs done.

Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household

Our grandparents expended more than five times as many calories engaging in non-exercise physical activity. They didn't have fancy gym memberships.
Today, mechanical conveniences do most of our yard work, kitchen work, and household chores. (Anyone else have one of those robot vacuum cleaners?) We drive twice as many miles as we did in the 1970s, and fewer than 10% of our children walk to school, down from the high of 50%. Now, with online shopping, we don't even have to make the trip to the grocery store.
In contrast, blue zones residents are nudged into physical activity about every 20 minutes. That's why we asked our social community to tell us how they move naturally. Here's what they had to share ⬆️.
This week, take a cue from the longest-living people on Earth and get in some natural movement!

Here is the second step to making a good family emergency plan.
Step 2: Consider specific needs in your household.

As you prepare your plan tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets or specific needs like operating medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance. Keep in mind some these factors when developing your plan:

Different ages of members within your household
Responsibilities for assisting others
Locations frequented
Dietary needs
Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
Languages spoken
Cultural and religious considerations
Pets or service animals
Households with school-aged children

Many factors can influence healthy aging. While some of these factors, such as genetics, are not within our control, research shows there are steps you can take to help manage your health as you age. Even making small changes in your daily life can help you live longer and better.

Managing stress, learning new things, staying active, going to the doctor regularly, connecting with family and friends, and choosing health foods can all help keep you healthy as you age.

Make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area, such as fire, dust storm, power outage, or tornado. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

Step 1: Put a plan together by discussing the questions below with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan.

How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
What is my shelter plan?
What is my evacuation route?
What is my family/household communication plan?
Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
