Our culture treats death like an event instead of a chapter of life. That's why so many families arrive overwhelmed and unprepared.

The most meaningful conversations don't belong in the hours after death—they belong in the final season of life.

Reflection before a crisis changes everything.

Memorial tattoos age with us, just like grief does. They shift, soften, deepen. And with the right artist (or the right support), they can grow more beautiful over time.

We're talking about it on the latest Good Grief podcast.

There's no wrong way to keep someone close.

Some families choose butterflies. Some want angels, portraits, or something deeply personal, like an inside joke only they would understand.

Grief doesn't have to stay invisible. And the ways we remember? They're as unique as the love we carry.

We talked more about this on our latest podcast episode: comment "GOODGRIEF" to listen.

You might find something that resonates.

Growing up in a funeral home family taught me things most people don't learn until much later in life.

• How to sit with someone in pain without trying to fix it
• That grief doesn't follow a timeline or rules
• How to have hard conversations without fear
• That showing up matters more than saying the right thing
• That every life deserves to be honored, no matter the budget or the turnout

These weren't lessons from a book. They were learned at the dinner table, watching my parents care for neighbors during their hardest days.

Now I see what a gift that was. The ability to hold space for grief, to speak openly about death, to lead with empathy instead of discomfort. It's shaped how I parent, how I serve families, and how I move through the world.

Friends helping friends. Neighbors serving neighbors. That's the O'Connell way.

We show up because we're part of this community, not apart from it.

When you see us flipping pancakes at the breakfast fundraiser or cheering on the sidelines at the game, it's not a marketing moment. It's just us being neighbors.

Because the families we serve aren't customers. They're the people we sit next to at church, wave to at the grocery store, and share this place we all call home with.

Community isn't something we do. It's who we've been for generations. 🤍

From a funeral director who's walked alongside hundreds of families.
5 things that actually help with grief (that people don't always realize)

1. Routine - even small ones.
Make your bed. Drink water. One foot in front of the other.

2. Permission to laugh.
Joy and grief can coexist. Your person would want you to smile again.

3. Saying their name out loud.
They're not forgotten when you speak of them.

4. Asking for specific help.
'Can you bring dinner Thursday?' is easier for people than 'Let me know if you need anything.'

5. Knowing that healing isn't linear.
Some days will feel like steps backward. That's normal.

Grief is love with nowhere to go. These small things help create space for both.

Which of these resonates most with where you are today? 🤍

You're not alone in this journey.

Last week, our community gathered to practice kintsugi - the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold.

Each person painted gold into the cracks of a ceramic heart. Not to hide the break. To honor it.

Kintsugi teaches that broken things aren't ruined. They're transformed. The fracture becomes part of the story - made visible, made beautiful.

Grief works like that too. It cracks us open. And slowly, with time and care, we learn to hold both the break and the gold.

You're not broken beyond repair. You're being made into something new. 🤍

👇 Please post any pictures from the event or any Kintsugi that you have done - we'd LOVE to see it.

The Scams Targeting Seniors

"Grandma, I'm in trouble. I need money."

The voice sounded just like him. But it wasn't.

Scammers are getting frighteningly good at exploiting the love and trust of our seniors. They prey on the instinct to help family, to act fast, to protect the people we care about.

In our latest Good Grief Podcast episode, Sheriff Scott Knutson shares real local stories and practical steps families can take to protect their loved ones. It's an eye-opening conversation we think every family should hear.

Listen on our website or your favorite podcast app. And share it with someone caring for an aging parent, as it could save them heartache and money.

What do you do when there’s an error on a monument?

It’s frustrating. It’s expensive. And it’s one of those things we wish we could fix more easily.

If you’ve ever faced this, you’re not alone. And if you’re working on monument details now, take your time. Double-check everything. Sleep on it if you need to.

Some decisions really are set in stone.
