“Smile—it’s a holiday!”
🚫 Dismissive. Pressuring someone to act cheerful can feel invalidating and uncomfortable.

✅“Tell me your favorite memory of them.”
💬 Also a good option. Inviting memory-sharing helps people feel seen and keeps the loved one’s spirit present.

✅ “It’s okay if you’re not feeling festive.”
💬 Correct. Acknowledges their grief and removes pressure to “perform” joy during a hard season.
