As summer begins, these are great reminders that it is important to do less and take in the little moments all the more! ♥️ Hope everyone enjoys this first weekend of summer. I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone to stay well hydrated in the upcoming week! ☀️😊
How many summers do you have left?
The older I get, every summer becomes even more precious.
I’m 69. I don’t know how many summers I have left, so I’ve been out every night looking for lightning bugs and studying the stars or standing in the mist of a summer rain soaking up every drop.
No matter what age you are, summer is the permission slip to be lazy. This quote of mine went viral many summer moons ago, but I still stand by it:
“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.”
If that’s too spontaneous for you, schedule in summer. Every day, make micro-moments of summer happen so when summer runs out, you used up every bit. Carpe diem. Seize the day. Even the rainy ones..
We could all use a vacation. Or a staycation. Or a little daydreaming.
Here’s what’s on my summer play list:
Carry cash for lemonade stands. Tip big. Buy all the kids on the block a treat from the ice cream truck.
Listen to a screen door slam or a porch screen squeak.
Have a catch with your son or granddaughter. Start a game of four-square in the driveway. Learn how to inline skate.
Gather the neighbors for Red Light, Green Light. Ghost in the graveyard. SPUD. Red Rover. Capture the flag. Sardines. Freeze tag. Flashlight tag.
Wear flip flops all day. Paint every toe nail a different color. Eat every meal outside. Grill whenever possible.
Go retro. Start a game of checkers on the lawn. Bring out the croquet set and play in your swimsuit or your fanciest clothes.
Turn off the AC. Open the windows. Listen to the crickets. Or the early fireworks without complaining about those darn kids.
Eat more watermelon. See who can throw the rinds the farthest. Have corn on the cob with every meal.
Dime stores are gone but Dollar Stores offer all sorts of summer fun in bubble wands, water balloons, squirt guns, hula hoops and kick balls.
Plant an herb garden. Grow some tomatoes. Walk barefoot in the grass.
Hit a drive-in movie. A put-put range. Go out of your way to find a DQ or A&W.
Run through a sprinkler. Host a water balloon fight. Create an ice cream parlor on your porch. Sit on the stoop and talk to your neighbors.
Blast the Beach Boys from your balcony.
Chalk the sidewalk. Catch lightning bugs in a jar. Climb a tree.
Roll down a hill. Have a grass fight.
If you want a long summer, start now and get busy playing before it’s winter and you end up longing for the summer you missed.
