Mission 26

Mission 26 Training young adults with disabilities to prepare them for work.

My name is John Boersma and I live in Hudsonville Michigan with my wife Cristi and my 4 kids Ty, Sadie, Hunter and Wrigley. I have a Special Education degree from Hope College and Master's degree in Integrating Technology in the classroom. I have been a teacher for 19 years, with the last 6 years working at the Tech Center in Ottawa County. I have worked in almost every setting as it relates to Sp

ecial Education, and have worked over the past 25 years in various trades. I started Mission 26 because I have a passion for helping young adults with disabilities reach their full potential in their communities by showing them various career opportunities, teaching them various work skills and employability skills. The name Mission 26 was created because it is our "mission" to help young adults with disabilities learn the skills necessary to be employable before age 26, which is the age where special education services typically stops. On a personal note, my youngest son Wrigley has Down Syndrome and creating something like Mission 26 has always been a dream of mine, a place where people with disabilities can be trained and prepared for the world!

Session 3 day eight: we got to spend the day at CareLinc Home Medical Equipment and Supply with manager Ryan doing some projects for him! The young adults got a feel for a little hot warehouse work and some A/C packaging work…I think they liked the A/C today as it was pretty hot! It’s pretty awesome to show up to a business and have them be so welcoming to our team, integrate them into their work day and still have a great day at work, this is great stuff, thank you Carelinc!

Session 3 day seven: we got to spend the morning doing a project for Premier Granite & Stone, LLC. This was a great project for us to do as it helps evaluate so many work skills: communication, teamwork, efficiency, problem solving, time on task and work ethic all in one place, thank you!

In the afternoon we headed over to Allendale Ace Home Center to work with Ross, Ashley and so many great team members out there. What’s pretty neat to see is the employees adapting and being so willing to walk along side our crew helping them learn a job and build their skill set. A pretty awesome group of people at Ace out there for sure, thank you!

Session 3 day three: we spent the day at one of our favorites Galloup with Mark, Roger and their awesome team! We had a great day doing rotations through front counter, box making, order picking, counting and sweeping! The team in the warehouse is amazing to work with and it’s so fun to hear the comments in the van. We definitely brought the energy today, thanks everyone!

Session 3 day two: we spent the morning at Fellinlove Farm with Miss Cheryl and her crew! We got to experience what farm life is like doing jobs around the farm! The animals don’t take days off so that means work needs to be done every day, thank you Cheryl for having us and pouring into us!

In the afternoon we had the pleasure of teaming up with workers at Arrows Restaurant. Kids got plugged right into serving, bussing tables, working the cash register and cleaning dishes. It was a fast paced environment where everyone needs to do their job effectively to serve the people well. All the kids left saying they would love to work at Arrows and when asked why, they all responded with something about the person they worked with….which is a great testament to Arrows….thank you!
