Come back for Part 2 because I’m fed up:
I’m going to say what a lot of my clients are feeling but don’t always have the words for. As a trichologist, it is deeply frustrating to meet client after client who has spent months to years cycling through topicals, injections, and minoxidil with little to no results—yet no one sat them down and told them the truth about their prognosis.
Hair restoration is not one-size-fits-all. Not every scalp can regrow hair the same way. Not every condition is responsive to the same protocol. And pretending otherwise does real harm.
What hurts the most is seeing this disproportionately affect African American men and women—women especially. Many of us intentionally seek out providers who look like us, believing that representation equals understanding. Believing our concerns will be taken seriously. Believing we’ll get honesty.
But too often, we’re not being educated. We’re not being prepared. We’re not being given realistic expectations or alternative paths forward. And that is a failure of care. Period.
My frustration comes from advocacy. From wanting better for my community. From knowing that informed clients make empowered decisions—and that honesty should always come before a prescription.
