The World Is Full of Suffering

In the Christian story, Christ does two things that are messianic.

One is, he takes the suffering of the world onto himself because that is a weird idea. So what does that mean? Let us think about it psychologically. Well, maybe it means that it's your job: the world is full of suffering, and you should accept that as your responsibility—past, present, and future.

You are supposed to do something about that as much as you can, and maybe you start with your own localized suffering. Put yourself together. But then you expand that outward, and you decide that you are not a victim of that even though your part and parcel of it.

You are the potential solution to that, and you accept that as a responsibility. So that is part of taking on the load; that is part of bearing a cross. You could look at it that way.

The cross is sort of a symbol of the place of maximal suffering, so you accept that as a challenge, not as something that you're victimized by.
