Take a moment for yourself on International Stress Awareness Day!

Respite care gives primary caregivers a break so they can rest, travel, or spend time with family and friends. Using assistive technology (AT) can make caring for someone easier. That helps caregivers manage their time and stress better, allowing them to keep going and reach their goals.

Our AT Respite Kits are designed to support both caregivers and the people they care for. Here are a few items that can help you unwind and recharge:

Sleep Lamp - A gentle light can make all the difference when you’re trying to wind down. The sleep lamp promotes calm, helping you create a peaceful environment for rest after a long day.

Bed Buddy Comfort Wrap - Warm or cool, the comfort wrap soothes sore muscles and eases tension. It’s a simple way to give your body the care it deserves after hours of caregiving.

Amazon Echo Show - Sometimes, taking care of yourself means making things easier. With the Echo Show, you can set reminders, play relaxing music, or connect with loved ones hands-free, giving you more space to focus on what matters most.

Aura LED Projector - Transform your space into a soothing environment with calming visuals. The Aura LED Projector displays gentle moving scenes with adjustable brightness, timer settings, and app connectivity. It's perfect for winding down or creating a quiet moment of peace.

October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month, and we're so excited to share this AAC success story! Bishop was referred to Oklahoma ABLE Tech by SoonerStart and Little Light House to try assistive technology (AT) devices to help him communicate. Bishop’s family reached out to the Device Loan Program at Oklahoma ABLE Tech for help finding AT to meet his needs.

“My son was so frustrated trying to communicate his needs to us,” said Bishop’s mom.

Bishop tried an AAC device equipped with the LAMP Words for Life (WFL) app. AAC allows users who have difficulty using their natural speech to communicate. LAMP WFL is a robust language system that gives users access to many communication options!

After trialing the app, Bishop was able to communicate his needs with his family.

“Bishop thinks it’s hilarious that he can now tell us ‘no’ to things he does not want us to do,” Bishop’s mom said. “I never thought I would be so happy for my toddler to tell me no!”

Oklahoma ABLE Tech offers nearly 5,000 different AT devices in a variety of categories. The Device Loan Program offers short-term loans for individuals to trial AT devices for up to six weeks at no cost. Device loans are available to Oklahoma residents with disabilities, their family members, and the professionals who support them. Visit the Device Loan Program webpage at https://www.okabletech.org/borrow to learn more about how to borrow AT.
