Joseph and his family were searching for something to help him put his socks on independently. They worked with Kory, an occupational therapist (OT) at Moore Autism Center, to help Joseph find assistive technology (AT) to support him.

Moore Autism Center is a multi-specialty clinic with autism specialist psychologists, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and OTs. Moore Autism Center functions as a comprehensive, one-step evaluation and treatment option for children, adolescents, and adults on the autism spectrum. With Moore Autism Center’s help, Joseph tried out a sock donner and a button hook.

Kory said Joseph's independence increased as he learned to use the AT. “He enjoys helping his brother put his socks on now, too,” Kory said.

Oklahoma ABLE Tech promotes the awareness of, access to, and acquisition of assistive technology (AT) devices and services for Oklahomans with disabilities. Join us today in celebrating Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day! National AT Awareness Day celebrates the importance of assistive technology for people with disabilities and older adults. This day reminds us of how helpful federal support and funding are in making sure people get the tools they need to go to school, work, and be part of their communities. AT helps people take part in everyday life. These tools are needed, not luxury items.

This day also honors the hard work of AT specialists, program coordinators, and other AT-related professionals. These individuals help people with disabilities find the right tools for their unique needs. It also recognizes the groups of people who work to make sure AT is available to those who need it.

April is Occupational Therapy Month, which recognizes the impact occupational therapy has on people’s lives. Occupational therapy empowers individuals to participate fully in daily life, whether that means learning, playing, working, or caring for themselves. Assistive technology (AT) is one of the most powerful tools occupational therapists (OTs) use to make that possible.

AT spans a wide range of tools, devices, apps, and services designed to make everyday activities more manageable, accessible, and safe. With AT, OTs can help people overcome challenges, build independence, and reach personal milestones.

AT may help children learn and play with toys and peers, support a student with reading in the classroom, or assist adults in removing barriers and open doors to live and work more independently.
This month, we celebrate OTs and the creative ways they help people do the things that matter most.
