One of the most common myths about ABA is that it’s just “bribing kids with candy.” In reality, reinforcement is all about motivation — not bribery.

Reinforcement is a science-based approach therapists use to help individuals learn and build meaningful skills. At first, that might mean using tangible rewards like toys or stickers to encourage learning. But over time, those rewards are faded and replaced with natural motivators — things that already occur in daily life, such as receiving praise, earning time with friends, or experiencing the satisfaction of completing something independently.

These natural reinforcers are what ultimately keep new skills going for the long term.💙

The Office of the Inspector General is increasingly focused on Medicaid-funded ABA. In 2023, it released a national evaluation highlighting systemic risks for programs across the country.

Over the past year, OIG has completed state audits of Indiana and Wisconsin, finding $56 million and $18 million in improper payments, respectively.

🎃 Inclusive Halloween for All! 🍬

Our mascot Journey is helping make Halloween a little more inclusive! 🧡

We’ve created a custom Trick-or-Treat PECS card that anyone can print and use while celebrating Halloween. PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System. It’s a way for individuals to communicate using printed pictures or icons — similar in purpose to an AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) device, but using physical visuals instead of a screen or tablet.

Some individuals may hand or show a PECS card instead of saying “Trick or Treat” out loud — and that’s perfectly okay! They’re still communicating in their own way and deserve the same smiles, treats, and kindness. 💙

💬 Myth Monday: AAC Edition!

There are a lot of myths out there about AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) — like that it stops speech or is only for non-speaking individuals.

The truth? 🗣️
✅ Studies show AAC can increase speech.
✅ Anyone with communication challenges can benefit.
✅ Even toddlers can learn AAC!
✅ It can be used anywhere — home, therapy, or the playground.

Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all, and AAC gives individuals more ways to be heard. 💙
