🌙 You have probably noticed that when the clocks change, your child’s internal clock does not. Children are sensitive to changes in light, timing, and routine. A gradual transition may help them settle at night and wake on time. A few small steps before and after the switch may help make the week go smoothly.

Try these small routine changes to help kids adjust to the time change:
◻️ Shift bedtime and wake time by 10 to 15 minutes for a few days before the switch.
◻️ Keep a calm, predictable bedtime routine.
◻️ Get bright morning light within an hour of waking. Open curtains, have breakfast by a window, or spend 10 to 15 minutes outside to help reset the body clock.

🩺 “Kids do best when the routine is steady and soothing,” says Neya Sterling, MD. “A gradual shift and a calming bedtime can help the transition go smoothly.”

Halloween is one of the biggest and most exciting nights of the year for kids. But it’s also one of the most dangerous nights for children walking on the road. Child pedestrian deaths are about four times higher on Halloween evenings between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. So plan ahead and prioritize safety to help make sure your child stays safe.

👻 What to wear
Choose bright, flame-resistant costumes that do not block vision. Make sure hats fit, shoes are secure, and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping. If a mask limits side vision, use face paint instead.

🎃 Be seen
Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags, carry glow sticks or flashlights, and stay on well-lit streets so drivers can see children more easily.

🚸 Crossing safely
Use sidewalks, cross at corners and marked crosswalks, and avoid crossing between parked cars. Most injuries happen away from intersections, so choose to use corners and crossings every time.

✅ Plan and supervise
Young children should trick or treat with a trusted adult. Older children should follow an agreed-upon route, carry a flashlight, and have a set return time. Remind everyone to avoid distracted walking.

🩺 “Simple steps like reflective accents, walking your route in advance, and practicing safe crossing can make a busy night much safer,” says Kailey Graybill, MD, a pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Set expectations early, stay visible, and enjoy the fun.”

When it comes to mammograms, different expert groups may recommend slightly different schedules. That’s because screening isn’t one-size-fits-all; the right timing depends on your personal health, history, and risk factors. But one thing we can agree on is that regular screenings help identify breast cancer earlier, when treatment choices are broader.

✨ That’s why the most important step you can take is to talk with your doctor. Together, you can decide:

* When you should begin screening
* How often you should be screened
* Whether you might need more than mammograms based on your family or medical history

🩺 “Early detection opens more options and leads to better outcomes,” says Hima Boppidi, MD, oncologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “We will help you understand your risk, choose a schedule that fits you, and stay on track.”

✅ Take the next step today — ask your doctor about the screening plan that’s right for you and schedule your screening mammogram online or call 713-442-8599.

Insulin resistance occurs when your body doesn’t respond properly to insulin, the hormone that helps manage your blood sugar by converting carbohydrates to energy. Over time, this can lead to higher blood sugar levels and disrupt how your body stores energy.

Common signs include fatigue after meals, weight gain around the midsection, sugar cravings, irregular menstrual cycles, and difficulty losing weight.

🩺 “Insulin resistance is more than just a blood sugar issue. It can disrupt your hormones and how your body stores energy,” says Dr. Anne Margarette Bacal, endocrinologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

If your body feels different, you’re not alone.

🩵 At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, we take time to understand what you’re experiencing. With a wide range of strategies from lab testing to tailored lifestyle planning, our team will help you get answers and find options that support better health and more consistent energy.

If you're preparing for surgery, you probably have questions about what the experience will be like and how to get the best outcome. At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, our surgeons use the da Vinci Xi system for certain procedures. It’s not a robot replacing your doctor. It’s a tool your surgeon controls with care and precision.

🩺 The system helps your doctor move with more accuracy in small, hard-to-reach areas. It uses tiny instruments and a high-definition camera that helps give a clear view of what’s happening inside your body. For many patients, this means smaller incisions and a recovery that feels a little easier.

✅ This option is often used for procedures like gallbladder removal or hernia repair, but your doctor will help you decide what makes the most sense for your situation. If robotic-assisted surgery is right for you, your doctor will walk you through what to expect and answer questions you have.

🍏 As the school year unfolds, students face more than academic challenges. Managing stress, friendships, and expectations can sometimes feel overwhelming and difficult to express.

🩺 “Kids experience stress differently depending on their age and how they manage emotions,” says Dr. Ujuchukwu Okpechi, pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “What looks like acting out or moodiness is often their way of signaling that something feels off.”

✅ Recognizing the signs
◻️ Stress often shows up through behavior. Younger children may cling more than usual or complain about stomachaches. Some might have trouble sleeping or return to habits they had previously outgrown. Older kids may become more irritable, lose interest in things they usually enjoy, or avoid school. Teens may withdraw socially, show changes in eating or sleeping patterns, or stop engaging in familiar activities.

◻️ Encouraging conversation
Instead of asking general questions like “How was your day?” try prompts that help them reflect and open up. You could ask, “What was the hardest part of your day?” or “Did anything surprise you today?” These types of questions may give your child space to share what they’re feeling without pressure.

◻️ Creating a sense of calm
A steady after-school rhythm may help. Include time for physical activity, creative play, or relaxation. A calming bedtime routine supports better sleep, and screen-free meals provide a good opportunity to connect. These small moments of structure and presence may help your child feel safe and supported.

◻️ Knowing when to ask for help
If your child’s stress begins to disrupt their sleep, schoolwork, or relationships, it may be time to reach out. At Kelsey-Seybold, our pediatricians are here to help you understand what’s going on and help connect you and your child to needed resources.

Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as someone with Type 2 diabetes. It often develops silently, without obvious symptoms, but it still increases your risk for serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and full-blown diabetes. The good news? With the right lifestyle changes and medical guidance, prediabetes can often be reversed.

🩺 “Fatigue, frequent thirst, or more trips to the bathroom can be early signs of elevated blood sugar,” says Dr. Vinita Bhagia, endocrinologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “The good news is that prediabetes is reversible when addressed.”

Roughly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has prediabetes, and 90% don’t know it. Risk increases with age, being overweight, family history, a sedentary lifestyle, or conditions like PCOS or gestational diabetes. Left unmanaged, prediabetes puts you at higher risk to develop Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

✅ If you're unsure what your symptoms mean or want to understand your risk, let’s talk. Early action can make all the difference.

Hot flashes at work. Mood swings that come out of nowhere. Periods that show up irregularly or not at all. If this sounds familiar, you could be in perimenopause.

🩺 “Perimenopause is a stretch of time leading up to menopause,” says Dr. Andrea Baker, OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “For some women, that duration of time can be long, and knowing where you are in that transition helps us guide treatment and support long-term health.”

Perimenopausal symptoms often begin in your 40s, though they may start earlier. And because changes develop gradually, they’re often mistaken for stress or aging. But if something feels off and you can’t pinpoint why, a conversation with your doctor may help clarify what’s happening.

Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing:
◻️ Menstrual cycle changes (irregularity, changes in flow)
◻️ Hot flashes and night sweats
◻️ Mood changes such as anxiety or irritability
◻️ Vaginal dryness
◻️ Bladder control problems (like frequent urination or urges)
◻️ Difficulty concentrating

✅ Our OB/GYNs are here to help you understand what’s changing and why — and to help develop a care plan that fits your needs.
