🔹Neuroplasticity-ability of brain and nervous system to change, structurally and functionally, without it SLPs would not have a job in swallowing rehabilitation!

🔹Compensation- temporary effect, without it swallow will return to baseline
-ex. chin tuck

🔹Rehabilitation-“long-term” effect
-“use it or lose it, use it and improve it”
-ex. effortful swallows

ALL SWALLOWS MATTER……Why??

•We swallow approximately 700+ times a day

• it takes 1/10 of a second to close the airway for swallowing and if this is delayed the risk of aspiration more than triples (University of Washington Otolaryngology)

• National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders reports DYSPHAGIA “difficulty swallowing” affects 15 million Americans of ALL ages

•SimplyThick, LLC refers to dysphagia as a silent epedemic because it’s under reported and under recognized

•Research reports as high as 68% of nursing home patients have dysphagia “difficulty swallowing”(NIDCD)

•Dysphagia complications such as pneumonia is one of the top 15 primary diagnosis that leads to hospital readmission (CMS)

•60,000 people die annually in the US from complications related to dysphagia (AHCPR)

• It is reported that up to 55% of aspiration is silent in nature (Chen, Kent, Cui 2021)
