My big kids officially started school this week, so I’m sharing the top 5️⃣ things we do at home to keep us healthy!
1. No shoes in the house. Think about it- kids walk into school bathrooms how many times per day? And do kids alllways make it in the toilet? Doubtful. On top of walking in #1 and #2 just being gross, think about all the viruses and bacteria spread through bodily fluids. Allowing shoes inside is a quick way to walk the stomach bug right on into your house. Not to mention any pesticides or chemicals picked up from sports fields, playgrounds or asphalt… If you’re not already a shoe-free household, make that switch and leave shoes in a designated area.
2. Wash hands. This one might seem like a no-brainer, but are you really enforcing it? I know when my kids come barreling in the door after school they almost always want a snack immediately, but we often have to remind them that the first thing they need to do is wash their hands! We don’t want germs going right to their mouths while they’re eating or spreading germs around our home. So as soon as we come in from anywhere- the store, the park, and especially school- we all wash our hands first thing.
3. Limit sugar and processed foods. Did you know that consuming high amounts of sugar can impair your white blood cells from fighting off viruses, bacteria and other pathogens for up to 12 hours?! SO much of our overall health is impacted by our gut. Feed it well!
4. Take your elderberry. Functional foods like elderberry can be incredibly beneficial. Elderberry has been clinically proven to shorten the duration of cold and flu viruses, so it’s apart our everyday routine. For my family, we take it every morning with breakfast. That’s just what works best for us, but find a time that works best for you and make it a habit!
5. Get good sleep. When people (kids especially) don’t get enough sleep, their bodies may not be able to produce enough infection fighting cells and antibodies; making them more susceptible to colds, flu and other infections. The takeaway- sleep keeps us healthy! Make sure it’s a priority.
I hope these tips help! Wishing all the kids a safe & healthy school year! 💜
