Recently a past client reached out for the sole purpose of sharing how well they are doing. They shared how they have experienced improvements in their relationships. They shared how they have successfully implemented skills learned during their time in counseling and provided general updates about their life. I was excited to get this update, and so honored that in the midst of their personal reflection, they thought to share this moment with me. Then I was struck by the thought, “This is what counseling is all about”.
Counseling does not turn your life into a fairy tale. Counseling doesn’t remove all the challenges from your life, and it doesn’t even always repair what is broken. It does not always make the depression and anxiety go away. It doesn’t erase the terrible experiences you’ve had along the way. Counseling doesn’t change the fact that you might still face challenges that seem insurmountable. It does not “fix” you or magically make life perfect. What counseling does is provide the skills and tools to more successfully navigate the challenges and obstacles encountered on this journey called life. It helps you to process and regulate those overwhelming emotions. It is a safe place to face those wounds and those terrible experiences, in order to heal and grow. Counseling offers an unequivocal ally always ready in your corner, walking alongside you on your journey, and rooting for you, and yes, at times, sitting with you in those dark places letting you know that it is okay to not be okay.
If you are considering counseling, please know that it is not a sign of weakness or even brokenness. It is a place of healing, growth, and empowerment. You are not alone, and you don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. Reach out, take that next step in your journey toward healing, and growth.
