This month we honor Gallbladder & Bile Duct cancer patients. 💚

Did you know:
• Gallbladder cancer is more common in women, partly due to higher rates of gallstones.
• Chronic inflammation increases risk.
• In parts of Southeast Asia, bile duct cancer rates are higher due to liver fluke infections.
• Chronic Salmonella infections can increase gallbladder cancer risk.

These cancers are rare and often diagnosed at advanced stages. Awareness matters, especially for rare cancers.

Lately, we’ve shared many hopeful milestones at Carolina BioOncology Institute. But the reality of advanced cancer is that not every story ends the way we wish it would.

This month, we pause to acknowledge the patients who are still fighting, the families carrying the weight of uncertainty, and those we have lost.

Stage IV cancer is complex and deeply human. It demands resilience from patients, loved ones, and care teams alike. As a Phase I research site, our role is to provide access to innovative clinical trials, support difficult decisions, and continue advancing treatments so future outcomes can be different.

We honor every patient and every journey — not only the victories.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with colleagues at Southern Oncology Specialists of Charlotte, where Dr. Neel Gandhi presented on advances in prostate cancer care as part of a continuing medical education session.

The discussion highlighted evolving treatment strategies, the potential benefit of early consideration of Phase I clinical trials, and emerging research, such as in circulating tumor cells for prostate cancer development.

Collaborative education strengthens patient access to innovative research and helps ensure patients are considered for clinical trials at the right time in their care journey.

🎗️ Cervical Cancer Awareness February

In recognition of Cervical Cancer Awareness, here are important facts about Stage IV cervical cancer that highlight why continued research and innovation matter.

• About 13,000 invasive cervical cancers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.
• Overall five-year cervical cancer survival is about 68 percent, and at Stage IV the five-year survival rate is approximately 20 percent.
These statistics show how critical it is to advance early detection, new treatment strategies, and clinical research across the spectrum of cervical cancer care.

At Carolina BioOncology Institute and BioCytics, we are committed to advancing cancer research that expands treatment options, improves outcomes, and supports patients at every stage of their journey.

This month, we highlight Mr. Armistead's cancer journey. ✨ In March 2024, Armistead was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and began chemotherapy. By July, the side effects were taking a significant toll on his life, limiting his time with his four sons, his ability to golf, and his enjoyment of sports events. With a prognosis of only eight months, Armistead’s hope was fading. But after researching alternative options and the national register for genetic markers and Phase 1 clinical trials, he self-referred to Carolina BioOncology Institute to explore potential treatments.

Armistead transitioned from chemotherapy to a Phase 1 clinical trial, and by August 2025, he was celebrating one year on investigational treatment. The results were life-changing, including a 56% reduction in tumor size from baseline, complete resolution of all three original lesions, and a dramatic decrease in his tumor markers.

Armistead reflects that moving from traditional chemotherapy to a clinical trial transformed his quality of life, providing more freedom, significantly fewer side effects, and a renewed sense of vitality. Today, he continues to thrive, surrounded by the love and support of his family. 💙His story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing potential that innovative research and clinical trials offer, instilling hope for many facing aggressive diseases.

As the year comes to a close, we want to extend our gratitude to all the 2025 interns and shadowers who joined us this year, bringing their passion and curiosity to the fields of biotech, immunotherapy, and cell-based research.

Our interns had the unique opportunity to explore Phase I immuno-oncological clinical trials and gain firsthand experience in growing tumor cells and immune cells. They also received valuable exposure to the real-world operations of early-phase clinical research, which is essential for shaping the next generation of innovators.

We remain deeply committed to fostering education and mentorship in STEM, and we’re excited to continue this journey with future cohorts. We can’t wait to welcome the next group of bright minds eager to make an impact in the world of biotech and clinical research.
