Birkdale Audiology

Birkdale Audiology Providing quality medical care to families in the Lake Norman/Charlotte, N.C. area for over 12 years

Our entire staff is assembled for one purpose: to serve our patients. Our goal is to provide you with the best possible hearing care we can, based on your individual needs. When it comes to your hearing, your choice of a hearing healthcare professional is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Since a hearing aid can’t be prescribed like eyeglasses, the proper hearing aid recommendation and fitting is highly dependent on the judgment and skill of the professional selecting the instrument. We test your hearing, select, and dispense the hearing instrument best suited to your personal, professional, cosmetic and financial needs.

Did you know? Around 430 million people worldwide — that’s more than the population of the U.S. and EU combined — live with disabling hearing loss, meaning their hearing is impaired enough that communication and daily life can be seriously affected. This figure comes from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO explains that disabling hearing loss refers to a reduction in hearing greater than 35 decibels (dB) in the better-hearing ear — enough to make regular conversation difficult without support like hearing aids or cochlear implants.

As WHO puts it, “untreated hearing loss can have a devastating impact on people’s ability to communicate, to study and to earn a living.”

Let’s raise awareness — and remove barriers so that everyone has access to the care and technology they need.

Today, we recognize International Cochlear Implant Day 🎧

Cochlear implants have transformed access to sound for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, supporting communication, education, and connection at every stage of life.

On February 25, we celebrate the technology, professionals, and families who make hearing possible in new ways—and the recipients whose stories remind us why hearing care matters.

It’s Tinnitus Awareness Week

Ringing, buzzing, or humming in your ears isn’t “just annoying” — it’s a sign your hearing may need attention.

Tinnitus affects millions of people worldwide and is often linked to hearing loss, noise exposure, and stress. For many, it can interfere with sleep, impact mental health, and reduce overall quality of life.

The good news? You don’t have to live with it alone. A hearing evaluation can help identify the cause and open the door to management options that improve daily life.

If tinnitus is part of your story, this week is a reminder to listen to your ears — and take the next step toward better hearing health.

Did you know? More than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

This statistic comes from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), and it highlights just how important early education, support, and resources are for families learning about hearing differences.

For many parents, newborn hearing screening is the first moment they learn their child may be deaf or hard-of-hearing. As NIDCD notes, “Early identification of hearing loss gives a child the best possible chance for healthy development.”

Understanding, communication options, and community support can make an enormous difference in a child’s language development and confidence.

"Happy National Winnie the Pooh Day!

Winnie the Pooh reminds us of something simple — and powerful: the importance of truly listening.

Whether it’s a friend sharing their day, a child telling a story, or a loved one saying “I love you,” hearing is how we stay connected to the people who matter most — and how we show up for one another.

Today is a sweet reminder that listening supports emotional wellness, deeper relationships, and meaningful moments we never want to miss.

January is National Self-Care Month

Self-care is more than rest and routines — it’s about caring for every part of your well-being, including your hearing.

Untreated hearing loss is closely linked to mental health challenges, feelings of loneliness, and cognitive decline. When we struggle to hear, we often withdraw from conversations and the connections that keep us engaged and fulfilled.

As we begin a new year, consider making hearing health part of your self-care plan. Prioritizing your hearing supports clearer communication, stronger relationships, and a healthier mind. Come visit us to have your hearing checked.

Because taking care of yourself means staying connected to the world around you.

Did you know that in the U.S., about 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears?

That might not sound like a lot — but when you consider how many babies are born every year, it adds up to thousands of children who could benefit from early care and support. Early detection is especially important: as the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) notes, “infants who are born deaf or hard-of-hearing have a better chance of learning language if the hearing loss is identified immediately after birth.”

Let’s spread awareness and support hearing checks for newborns.

A new year is a great reminder to check in on your hearing. Just like vision and dental exams, an annual hearing check helps you stay aware of changes and protect your hearing long term.

Making hearing health part of your yearly routine can help you hear your best all year long.
