Know the facts about ticks.

A common misconception we encounter is that the white-tailed deer plays a direct role in the spread of Lyme disease. While white-tailed deer play a role in increasing the tick population, their bodies do not harbor the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The typical reservoirs for Lyme disease are rodents, particularly the white-footed mouse.

Kids getting stressed about going back to school? Teach them how controlling their breathing can help them feel better and focus on the good. It’s a lesson they’ll benefit from for years to come.

Today was our final day of ACHIEVE Academy 2025. We packed a lot in! Campers learned to shop on a budget and donated food items to the local food pantry. We visited the HCCTC and learned how to make gnochi from scratch. Then we visited the farmer’s market for lunch and completed the Discover SCUBA training in the afternoon. These youth are amazing and the future of our Huntingdon County community looks bright!

Advancing Community Health Innovation through Education, Vision, and Empowerment

A lack of health literacy, or an individual’s ability to obtain and understand basic health information, often influences the health and well-being of the community. With problems including access to healthcare, chronic conditions, and behavioral health and substance abuse issues influencing the health of Huntingdon County, Juniata College and Penn Highlands Healthcare have partnered to implement a health literacy program inspired by research about the relationship between health literacy and health outcomes, and population health initiatives such as “Force for Health” and Ohio “HPAC” (Health Professions Affinity Community).

The ACHIEVE program will educate high school youth in about how to live a healthy life and access resources in the community. Program participants will receive a health literacy education through modules and will have the opportunity to address a health problem in the community through community health innovation projects. This program is fully funded and supported by Juniata College and Penn Highlands Huntingdon, provided to students in Huntingdon County at no cost.

Mission: To improve health literacy and alleviate poverty in the community through the education and empowerment of youth.
