Our Story
Gestalt therapy is a holistic approach to understanding and working with individuals developed by Frederick Perls, M.D., with significant contributions from Laura Perls, DSc. and Paul Goodman. It is an experiential, rather than interpretive therapy that values and attends to the interplay and integration of body, mind and emotions as they occur in the present moment. The goal of Gestalt Therapy becomes not only the resolution of emotional problems but also excitement and growth in the human personality.
The Gestalt Center of Long Island, established in 1977, is a non-profit educational institution provisionally chartered by the Board of Regents, State of New York Education Department. The primary purpose of the Center is to offer a high quality program of training in Gestalt Psychotherapy to mental health professionals and to provide educational programs for the general community. In addition, we are recognized by NYS Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0044, and by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health practitioners #MHC-0001, and licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0039. (Effective April 11, 2017 we are no longer offering NBCC continuing education credits). The Center’s faculty have post-graduate training in Gestalt Psychotherapy and have extensive experience as Gestalt psychotherapists in private practice and clinical settings. Adjunct faculty who have expertise in approaches complementary to Gestalt Psychotherapy add breadth to the training experience!
Education
Our courses and training provide the opportunity to observe, experience and practice Gestalt Psychotherapy under the supervision of training staff. They serve to integrate training and method and allows trainees to translate theoretical course work into practice.
