A leader entered the world on this day, 104 years ago. On March 22, 1922, Mildred Mitchell-Bateman was born. She would go on to become one of the most important figures in mental health care in West Virginia.

She came to the state in 1947 and started working at Lakin State Hospital in Mason County, which at the time treated Black patients during segregation. She later returned and became superintendent, leading the hospital during a time when both medicine and society were starting to change.

By 1962, she made history when Governor Wally Barron appointed her director of the state Department of Mental Health. That made her the first Black woman in West Virginia to hold a high level state administrative position. She stayed in that role for 15 years and helped shape mental health care across the state.

She didn’t stop there. She went on to serve as vice president of the American Psychiatric Association, worked on a presidential commission that helped create the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, and later helped train future doctors at Marshall University.

Dr. Mitchell-Bateman passed away in 2012, but her impact is still felt today. The Huntington State Hospital was renamed in her honor, a reminder of the work she did to improve mental health care for people across West Virginia.
