When Laykin Hayes was just 15, she spent a year battling Ewing Sarcoma at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital. Some of her brightest moments? Visits from Macy, a golden retriever therapy dog who gave her a chance to feel like more than just a patient.

Fast forward seven years: Laykin, now healthy and working as a veterinary assistant, found herself caring for Macy when the therapy dog needed treatment of her own.

“Macy, I remember you! You took care of me when I was in the hospital, and now I get to take care of you,” Laykin said.

Though Macy passed away this summer, her legacy of comfort and joy continues to live on in every patient she touched. Her story is also a reminder of the healing power of therapy animals and the volunteers who make their visits possible.

🌟 PICU Employee of the Month 🌟

Noah Smith, RN, was named PICU Employee of the Month for August.

Here are a few things Noah's coworkers had to say about him:

🤝 Noah has really stepped up as a night-shift leader in the PICU.

👏 Noah is always the biggest help on the unit. Whether it is picking up extra when we are short or jumping in wherever the need is on the unit. He goes above and beyond to ensure great care for his patients and their families. He is always trying to learn something new, because he CARES which is what being a PICU nurse is all about!

🎉 Way to go, Noah!

Congratulations to Dr. Dana Lycans on recently completing the region's first Bridge-Enhanced® ACL Restoration (BEAR®) procedure at Cabell Huntington Hospital! 👏

The BEAR procedure, developed by Miach Orthopaedics, is the first FDA-approved medical advancement that enables the body to heal its own torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) without the need for a tendon graft.

Marshall Health Network is the only site in West Virginia and the surrounding region offering multiple cutting-edge ACL procedures, including both the BEAR implant and the fertilized ACL technique, which uses bone marrow concentrate, demineralized bone matrix and other biologics to enhance graft healing following ACL reconstruction.
