St. Mary's Medical Center achieved Gold Honors from the West Virginia Hospital Association today during the 2025 Health Care Leadership Summit.

This honor is in recognition of the work St. Mary's does to establish and maintain trust among providers, policymakers and the public through actions, sensitivity, professionalism and community-minded commitment to service as members of the West Virginia Hospital Association.

Gold Honors signifies we have successfully implemented the nine WVHA Commitment to Excellence Honors Program topic areas, which include Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM), antibiotic stewardship, care transitions, cybersecurity, hospital emergency management program, influenza vaccination, opioid response initiative, workplace violence, and WVHA discharge data program.

St. Mary's, along with Cabell Huntington Hospital, also received the 2025 West Virginia's Governor's Award for Life in support of organ donation.

St. Mary's President Angie Swearingen was in attendance to accept today's awards.

Marshall Health Network is hosting two free drive-thru flu shot clinic for those 16 and older.

*Anyone with egg allergies should receive vaccinations from their primary care provider and children under age 16 should receive vaccinations from their pediatrician. A parent or guardian must be present to provide consent for minors.

When Laykin Hayes was just 15, she spent a year battling Ewing Sarcoma at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital. Some of her brightest moments? Visits from Macy, a golden retriever therapy dog who gave her a chance to feel like more than just a patient.

Fast forward seven years: Laykin, now healthy and working as a veterinary assistant, found herself caring for Macy when the therapy dog needed treatment of her own.

“Macy, I remember you! You took care of me when I was in the hospital, and now I get to take care of you,” Laykin said.

Though Macy passed away this summer, her legacy of comfort and joy continues to live on in every patient she touched. Her story is also a reminder of the healing power of therapy animals and the volunteers who make their visits possible.

In a profound moment of compassion and courage, staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center this weekend lined the hallways to honor a patient making their final journey as an organ donor.

This Honor Walk paid tribute to a life lived with generosity and a legacy that will continue through the lives saved by their selfless gift.

Our hearts and prayers are with the patient’s family and loved ones. We are deeply grateful they allowed us to stand witness and share in this meaningful farewell.

Christine Gilkerson, MD, has been named Medical Director of Clinical Efficiency and Patient Flow at Marshall Health Network-St. Mary’s Medical Center. In this new role, Gilkerson will work with hospital teams to help patients return home or transition to the next stage of their care more smoothly and without unnecessary delays.

This weekend, we welcomed alumni of St. Mary’s School of Nursing home to celebrate 99 amazing years of nursing education. The day was filled with fellowship and good memories, as well as a time of rememberance of those alumni we have lost. 💙

The St. Mary’s School of Nursing was established in 1926 and is one of the oldest nursing programs in West Virginia still in operation.
