Sunscreen and infants 👶🏻
It is important to do everything possible to protect infants from the sun’s harmful UV rays and teach children healthy sun care habits – starting at an early age.
To keep your child safe outdoors, we recommend the following:
⛱️ KEEP INFANTS IN THE SHADE. This is the best way to shield babies from the sun, especially if they are younger than six months old. If you can’t find shade, create your own using an umbrella, canopy or the hood of a stroller.
🧢👚 DRESS IN SUN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. Cover skin in light layers. In addition, make sure your baby wears a wide-brimmed hat and even sunglasses with UV protection.
🧴NO SUNSCREEN UNDER 6 MONTHS. We do not recommend SPF lotion under 6 months old due to skin sensitivity. However, if shade and adequate clothing are not available, apply a minimal amount of broad-spectrum, fragrance-free, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. ☀️Look for sunscreens containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which are less likely to irritate skin. Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating, as there is no such thing as “waterproof” sunscreen.
💦 STAY SAFE ON HOT DAYS. Make sure infants do not get overheated and drink plenty of fluids. If fussy, crying excessively or getting redness on any exposed skin, take them indoors immediately.
💙 Sun protection is important at every stage of life, including infancy. Always protect yourself and your family from the sun, and see a us if you have any questions about how to take care of your baby’s skin. 📱Call — 304.523.5100
