Funeral Director Friday:
True or False: The term “wake” came from people waiting to see if the deceased would “wake up.”
What do you think?
Answer: TRUE… sort of!
This old saying has some truth to it. In centuries past, before modern medicine and embalming, families often kept vigil over the deceased for several hours or even days, partly out of respect and spiritual/cultural reasons, and partly to be sure their loved one had truly passed.
Over time, these vigils became social gatherings where family and friends would share stories, pray, and support one another, eventually becoming what we now know as a wake.
Culture, different areas of our country, etc can influence what a wake looks like, but today, a wake (or visitation) is still a time to gather, remember, and honor a life well lived.
