We’re excited to spotlight Dr. Armein Rahimpour, one of our outstanding Chief Surgical Residents!

💍 Married in April 2024—his wife, Kendell, has been a big source of support throughout residency.
👩‍⚕️ Kendell is a Family Medicine resident who will graduate the same night as Dr. Rahimpour!

🎓 Meet Our Administrative Chief Resident – Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan 🎓

👨‍⚕️ Next step: Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Case Western/University Hospitals in Cleveland.
👩‍⚕️ His wife, Shreya, will begin her own practice in Internal Medicine this summer.
🐾 He's a proud pet dad to two beautiful dogs and a cat.

🔥 Focusing on Purpose, Resilience — and Ice Cream! 🍨🔥

Wednesday marked the kickoff of year two of our "fireside chats," a quarterly wellness series centered on resilience in the clinical setting, led by the amazing Tenikka N. Phillips, MA, LPC, EAP/SAP Coordinator at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

After last year’s powerful one-hour session earned rave reviews from our residents, we incorporated her as a regular part of our wellness programming. Today’s focus: navigating transitions—from incoming interns to newly promoted residents—and how to stay grounded in the midst of change.

Because as a surgical resident, resilience isn’t optional—it’s essential. And what better way to wrap up a meaningful session than with build-your-own ice cream sundaes? 🍦💚🩺🌟

Our General Surgery residents recently participated in an interactive Suture & Hemostasis Workshop.

From refining suturing techniques to mastering bleeding control strategies, this hands-on session gave our residents an incredible opportunity to sharpen essential surgical skills that directly impact patient outcomes.

🌟 Exciting News! After a soft launch this spring to build momentum, the Marshall Women in Surgery Chapter — whose members are proud participants in the American Medical Women’s Association — recently held its first official meeting!

We’re building a supportive community for women surgeons with upcoming events, mentorship, and advocacy. Highlights from our kickoff meeting:

📚 Book Club: "Take Care of Them Like My Own."
🎤 Upcoming talks on negotiating contracts, overcoming bias, and gender disparities.
🤝 Open-door mentoring—informal, supportive, and always available.
💬 Discussing support for female residents balancing family and career.
‍ 👩‍⚕️MUSOM surgical interest event planned for January 2026.
🤝 Partnering with other chapters and engaging medical students

🩺Our Surgical Residency Program proudly participated in the newly launched American College of Surgeons Objective Assessment of Skills in Surgery (ACS OASIS)!

Our amazing PGY-3 residents, Drs. Cassier, Persily, Price, and Roberts Moore, took part in this formative, simulation-based assessment that identifies strengths and areas for improvement across key technical skills using eight time-limited, faculty-assessed simulation stations:

✅ Lipoma Excision
✅ Laparoscopic Appendectomy
✅ Laparotomy
✅ Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
✅ Ultrasound-Guided Central Line Access
✅ Trocar/Veress Needle Insertion
✅ Repair of Enterotomy
✅ Chest Tube Placement

Wellness through Service 🌿🧤
As part of our residency wellness initiatives, we stepped outside the hospital to give back—because we all feel better when we’re helping others. For the second year in a row, our team partnered with the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, where we weeded, mulched, cleaned porches and entrances, and tidied up the back garden area. 🌼🧹We wrapped up the day with lunch alongside the dedicated staff before returning to clinical duties—grateful for the chance to pause, connect, and serve our community. We’re sharing just a few snapshots, because it only takes a handful to capture the energy, teamwork, and heart our amazing residents brought to the day. You can find the rest of their smiling faces on our website later this week. Surgeons for Service isn’t just a theme—it’s a mindset. 💚🩺🪣🧹🌺

Welcome to Our New Surgery Interns! 🎉🩺

After two packed weeks of orientation, our incredible new interns are officially in their first week on service—and already making us proud.

To kick things off, our chief residents hosted a pool party and picnic last weekend to welcome them to the team. 🌞💦🌭 It was the perfect way to celebrate the start of this exciting journey.
