Is it normal teenage emotions… or depression?
Adolescence is a time of big emotional changes. Mood swings, frustration, and feeling overwhelmed can all be a normal part of growing up.
But sometimes emotional changes may signal something more than typical teenage stress.
Here are a few signs that it may be more than normal mood swings:
• Persistent sadness or irritability
• Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
• Changes in sleep or appetite
• Difficulty concentrating or falling grades
• Withdrawing from friends or family
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 1 in 5 adolescents experience a major depressive episode before adulthood.
If emotional or behavioral changes last for weeks, worsen, or start affecting school, relationships, or daily life, it may be helpful to seek a professional evaluation.
Early support can make a significant difference.
