Hospital Bag: Affirming Care Edition 🏳️‍⚧️

While each surgery, procedure, and treatment will be different, these are some of the things that I’ve found helpful to pack outside of the lists of items your surgeon and team will provide:

🧤Gloves: There will be dressing changes and catheter emptying and you want a clean environment

✅Pads: There will be bleeding and gives freedom to walk around

🧊Ice/Ice Packs: Swelling and pain management is key for a couple weeks

💩Squatty potty/ Stool: This may not be appropriate for all however, is great for that first p**p

✅Chuck pads/Liners: Allowing surgical sites to air out will be important as well as protecting bed and couch surfaces

✅Pillow/Cushion: Makes travel more comfortable and sitting on harder surfaces

Affirming care looks different for all bodies and providing education, treatment, and preparation is the role of pelvic floor physical therapy

🩸Cramps Suck

If you’ve been wondering why your cramps suck during your period, this is for you

The uterus, which is responsible for your period, can be a temperamental witch so here are some tips to help:

• Having a full bladder or bowel can put added pressure on your uterus increasing cramps

• Lack of water decreases blood flow and causes tightening of tissues which can increase cramping

• Holding your breath causes tightening of muscles and tissues and can increase pressure causing cramping

• Cold causes muscles and tissues to constrict and tighten which can increase cramping

• During your period your body needs energy from food. Lack of nutrients or hunger can increase cramping

• Lack of movement causes muscle and tissue tightening that can lead to increased cramping

🌟It can be hard to motivate yourself when you’re feeling crappy during your period but with these tips you can improve not only your mood but your pelvic health as well

Let me know in the comments which of these surprised you the most
